May update! Last official update…. Unfortunately, still dealing with economic/health issues so the update is not complete: I had to make a decision 2 weeks ago, when I realized time was going to run out. Do I cut corners to complete the ship, or do I continue to build in a more careful way and pay attention to quality? I decided on the latter, after so many months of struggling with seams etc, seemed (pun intended) that I should strive for a quality end product. So, I will have another update after the official ending, with the finalized product, in the meantime, I will post what I have done so far!
The first decision was: paint! How? I decided to try a technique described in Ashley’s books: airbrush at right angles, both haze grey and deck grey. The idea is if you do it correctly and precisely, you don’t need to mask as much of the other surfaces.
First, color choices ! the instructions have color codes for Model Master colors, which is what I use (enamels). I wrote this information, but forgot where I got it from….
Haze grey = vertical surfaces, use Model Masters 1725, neutral gray
Deck Grey = water decks, use MM 1723, Gunship grey
I’m not too convinced of that scheme, seems a tad too dark… anyways, onwards!

Parts ready for deck grey…. No masking!
The main water deck… again, looks a tad dark to my eyes? I want to add more color/texture to the helo pad, maybe add some oil stains type of weathering, make it resemble a flight deck?

I tilt over the deck, you can see very little if any spray over… of course, when I do the haze grey I will mask SOME or I will end up with a ton of touch ups! I may try one side with and one without masking, see if it works…

You may remember this repair job on the weather deck:

The whole surface was also much scratched from all my manipulations, sanding, etc. I gave it some good sanding & buffing So, how did it come out after painting?

One blemish is still noticeable, oh well… couple minor ones you can see if you look close enough… but most of the blemishes are gone… I give myself a B- on this job, “ok” but can do better in the future!
For the smaller subassemblies, the AB technique works also, but I got some splatter on the vertical surfaces:

Hopefully, some day Ill be better at airbrushing and narrow down my ‘paint cone” so I can do a better/faster paint job.
I have also worked on the masts & sensors assemblies and construction, but do not have the camera with me at the moment. I am now filling in some sinkholes (after tempted to leave them as is) and setting out the parts for round 2 of paint (deck grey). Also assembling the life rafts, that get “light grey), and masking the mast sections that will be painted flat black.
The whole will then be assembled, touched up and prep for decals & weathering.
I will try and post more pics later today, before the deadline… rest assure that this baby will be finished and posted!
Cheers all!
