With the Gato nearing completion, I must admit I have been bitten by the dreadful Sub-Bug, heres my current project - Alangers Type XXIII in 1:72 - a less than perfect kit, that still have lots of potential ... oh, the agony ...

Thanks!, Not sure its going to be suited as a "blog" but anyway ...

Anybody know what the flat, square structure on the deck right before the sail is ? - it looks like some kind of vent - but my referancematerial have not been able to name it.

Cheers/Jan

Lots of great work there, Jan. Unfortunately, you will not be able to see 95% of it once you cover it.

Thanks, well you are quite rigth - but I will know its there , No, really, its not that great, more like a quick slabtogether because the you will be able to look right trough the sail with all those floodholes.

This kit is killing me ... damn!

We feel your pain Jan, but then we also enjoy watching you do this sort of thing so it sort of works out in the end.

Looks like you are having way too much fun with this one, but then that is what it is all about. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Thanks Jay - well its more that this kit is so full og dimensional errors and missing details its hard to decide where to start and where to stop.

For example - yesterday I submitted a review to Mark, but afterwards I have found two further errors that I have not included in the review ... will this never stop

Ok, it will look like a XXIII, just don“t bring out the ruler or any decent referance pictures ...

I spent the weekend gluing the hull together - had to do it in steps, its not really warped, but you have to be carefull to get a good fit.

Working on the bridge, will post pics later .....

Ok, slowly sneaking ahead, here I have done the bulkhead right behind the bridge, this is missing in the kit, so a little work with some sheet styrene was needed.

As you can see the exhaust right behind the sail has recieved a strip of styrene to build it a bit up, on this next picture you see it with some putty - the shape is a bit more carracteristic that the kits details. I have allso filled and sanded the holes in front of the sail for the stairs, I“m going to replace the kit parts with some homebent wire.

Here it is besides my Gato, allmost looks like a midget sub in comparrison - you might just be able to see that I have begun building op the shape around to watertight compartmen on front of the sail -

it ought to look like this:

I have the Eduard etch for the Special Navy type XXIII, most of the styff can be used on the alanger kit, and some should not be put on any of the kits, both for lack of referance to prove they where there, and because they belong on postwar XXIII subs.

Lots of filling and sanding needed to get a even finnish. - well, bedtime here in northern europe.

Cheers

Thanks, been busy with everything but modelling...

Added some details on the sail, the ecth from eduard and some weldseams from stretched sprue - green so its easyer to judge the effect.

The layout is part reference (crappy quality) and educated guesswork The kit lacks a lot of details on the hull and sail, mostly vents, hatches and weldseams. Sadly there aint that many highquality photos aruond - imagine, the Germans scrapped 2 of these boats in the 70“ties - shame on them!

Theres talks going on to raise one in that was sunk in Danish waters just before wars end - but the problem is to convince the autorities that theres nobody in it so that it isnt a wargrave.

Here is the complete boat ready for paint, the dark stripes is additional weldseams, and besides those visible on this photo, I have added more at the sterna and aft hull later

Schnorkel, radiomast and periscope get there paint done seperately.

Heres the sail after preshading with a dark gray, painting with a "us-navy" gray and postshaded with a Barley gray - all from vallejo.

The white is masked and painted when the rest had dried up nicely.

The preshading looks quite harsh in this photo, but it will blend nicely with filters and washes.

Comments and suggestions are welcome

Ahoy, Jan!

I think your pre-shading looks great, and like you have stated, will be blended further in the weathering process, which will only make it look even better! Overall, a grand looking build thus far, my friend...

Keep modeling!

Thanks Rui - I have some figures on the way from Mickster - but it will take a few weeks to get them here and painted .... so that will have to wait.
