USS Nassau Proceeds to Gulf of Mexico in Ike's Wake

The amphibious assault ship USS Nassau (LHA 4), was directed to proceed to the Gulf of Mexico Sept. 13 and take station off the Texas coast, prepared to render support to civil authorities in the wake of Hurricane Ike as needed.

Three ships, Nassau, USS Ponce (LPD 15), and USS Bataan (LHD 5), were ordered Sept. 12 to increase readiness for possible disaster response support.

Nassau was already at sea conducting routine operations, and was first directed south to operate off the Florida coast before receiving orders to move into the Gulf of Mexico.

The amphibious transport dock Ponce will get underway Sept. 14. The amphibious assault ship Bataan has been ordered to remain in a prepared-to-deploy status, ready to get underway within 24 hours, if needed.

Although there has been no specific tasking for these three ships, their at-sea readiness provides options for Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command and Commander, U.S. Northern Command.

Hurricane Ike Reveals Mystery Civil War Ship

The last time this mystery ship was visible was after Hurricane Ivan hit the Alabama Gulf Coast on September 16, 2004. At that time a much smaller portion of the ship was visible above the sand. Soon after Ivan revealed this historic treasure, the shifting sand covered the relic again.

Hurricane Ike's waves, this past week, pounded the beaches of the northern Gulf Coast and once again the mystery ship was revealed. This time however, much more of the ship was uncovered. This is the most visible the ship has ever been.

The roughly 150 foot long, 30 foot wide wooden ship appears to have been powered by steam. One of the artifacts within the perimeter of the ship's hull appears to be an old water pump. A long pipe runs down the center of the ship, with smaller pipes found near by.

While no one knows for sure what ship this is, historians speculate that the ship was a blockade-runner from the civil war.

The Mystery Ship, as it has come to be called, is located at the 6 mile marker on Fort Morgan Road.

Ahoy Gator,

Just an update to your story about the Mystery Ship on the Alabama coast, in a news story on Yahoo today they have stated that it is either the battleship Monticello from Civil War days or a schooner that ran aground in 1933. The idea that it may have been the Monticello stems from the fact that the wreck is 136.5 feet long and the Monticello is listed at 136 feet. The idea that it may be the schooner stems from steel cables found in the wreckage. The Army Corps of Engineers did a study in 2000 on the wreckage and identified it as the schooner Rachel, built in Mississippi in 1919 that ran aground off Fort Morgan in 1933. Either way, there are plans to move it from its' present location for further study and to prevent it from becoming a danger to homes in the area in case of more heavy weather.

Without finding a positive identifier like the ships' bell stating that it is the Monticello nearby, it would be difficult to prove that idea short of dating the material used in construction. Can't wait to hear or see more about this relic.

Ahoy Mates,

A sidenote to my update, checking the Nav Source site on the USS Monticello, it states that the USS Monticello was lost off the coast of Newfoundland so it must be a blockade runner of the same name that they are referring to in the article. Either that or whoever penned the newstory didn't do his research deep enough.
