Hi Gents,
I was thinking,When Enterprise is retired next decade, what will happen to the name.
Given that the Nimitz class Carriers are named after people,it would be a shame to not have the name Enterprise in the US Navy.
In fact I like what the Brits do with reassigning names ie:Ark Royal.
From a practical standpoint it makes Star Trek(Enterprise) lineage easier.
Your thoughts

Reassigning names is a common practice as the fact that there have been a few different ships named Enterprise over the years. I have a feeling there will always be a Big E in the USN just from the public relations boost alone.

Please, please, PLEASE nobody try to make any public guesses about which politician said what or whatever. Please? Part of the reason why I left some other ship modeling sites was the level of political BS. I'm overjoyed that I have no idea what anybody's politics are here and that nobody knows mine. Lets keep it that way, please? I'm begging ya!

Since the first Space was called Enterprise that ties the earth bound ships to space.
I am sure we will have an Enterprise again in the Future. Just like we will have another USS America. We could possibly have an Enterprise in that class.
I do agree Dade, NO POLITICS!!!

The US Navy is pretty good at public relations and also readily recycles names. The current Enterprise is the 8th ship to carry the name. BTW, thats not a record, the current USS Wasp is I believe the tenth, and I don't know if thats a record or not. If I had to guess on a new Enterprise, I would think that she might be an LHD amphibious assault ship. A lot of these seem to be named after older aircraft carriers. Of course, you can't really rule out a Nimitiz Class carrier. Certain names reverberate through American naval history, Kearsarge, Wasp, Hornet among them. I think that there will probably always be an Enterprise.

I will never understand -ever- WHY the American government and the U.S. Navy allowed the
CV6 USS Enterprise to be scraped, turned into razor blades and Ford bumpers.
If ANY WWII American combat ship was more deserving of becoming a permanent memorial and a shrine to those lost, try and name a better choice.

Thanks one and all,
for your input, I 'm sorry if some of you thought this was a bit of a rant it wasn't my intention,
I just love the name Enterprise from both a Naval,Aerospace & Star trek standpoint and would hate to see it retired.
Regards
Chris

Not a rant at all. I was wondering the same thing. Enterprise is a proude name within the USN and the RN. There have been 26 ship and boats named Enterprise over the years, including the first Space Shuttle.
Then add in the fact that Enterprise is the #1 starship in the Star Trek world and it is pretty impressive. Some congressman will have a Trekkie son or daughter and will make sure the name lives on.

Well, the current Enterprise started the CVN concept. I have feeling that it will pop up again with the new "Ford" class CVNs. Nothing against the new amphib assault ships, but the trend there is to name them for USMC battles. Besides, I don't see a gator freighter being named Enterprise.

Yeah, your right Kenny, Enterprise is too “big” for a Gator ship. CVN80 would make a good Enterprise. Then maybe we can get CVN81 USS Essex, then maybe CVN82 Hornet, and then Wasp, or I’ll stop.
Besides the America Class just does look like it would be an Enterprise type of ship.

LHD 1 USS Wasp
LHD 2 USS Essex
LHD 3 USS Kearsarge
LHD 4 USS Boxer
LHD 5 USS Bataan
LHD 6 USS BonHomme Richard
LHD 7 USS Iwo Jima
LHD 8 USS Makin Island
All of these of course, with the exception of Iwo Jima, are also the names of carriers in the US Navy. Personally I would love to see a new Enterprise, Saratoga, Intrepid, etc. as full size carriers, but I'm not that sure we will. Heck, I'd love to see a brand new USS MonItor!
