Thanks Rui, yes I feel it begins to pay of.

The wooden deck seems to be a little high... is it because it isn't glued

Correct, its not glues on, but the real deal have a small step front and aft where the steelcasing meets the wooden deck, I have tried to redo the hight of the deck ever so slightly to illustrate this.

When I am done painting the deck it will not be so noticable at the sides.... I hope

Small, but vital, update - working on the tower, as you can see a number of things has been done, first of all the railing aft is replaced with wire, the handrails that comes in PE (and PE is never round ....) has be replaced. The "guides" for the antennawire has been replaced with some scratch, some handholds have been made in round styrene, but the mesh on the sides are from the kit PE likewise that on the front console in the tower.

Dougie was so nice to bring me to realise, that I propably have a problem doing U-6, dang... gotta reshearch some more

Anyway, heres the pics:

Ah! The office!!

It's starting to look busy
would there be a shape inconsistency to make U-6?
just wondering...

I have recieved a picture shoving a prewar U-6 (numbers and lifebelt) that shows it with an all steel deck - no holes .... - but i have a ´41 picture that shows what apparently is the conventional wooden deck - problem is, at the 2 photoes doesn´t cover the same area of the deck

Double dang...

Hi Jan,

Your work on these subs is just amazing. Adding all the little details as you do just makes the model in my opinion. From opening up the vent holes to adding all the goodies that are visable through them turns your work into something special. Add a little "imagineering" here and there when things begin to get gray as to actual references shows just how creative the modeler has to be at times, a real inspiration for all of us. Looking forward to see just how it all comes together.

Hey, easy now Jay - don´t make me blush - I´m way to old for that Thanks!

I have been working a bit on the periscopes, the are very nice in turned aluminium, but the design is a bit poor, as they are completely flat where they are supposed to join the plastic, It don´t take much imagination to see them enter orbit with just a gentle touch.

With a bit of tape, a file and my drill, I manage to turn them a bit down, so I could get a good fit to the turret.

Done the basic paintjob on the tower - first a primer and then a preshading

Basecolor added - some of the preshading still show trough - care is needed.

And a postshading/highlighting with a lighter gray than the basecoler - now a day to dry up solid and then some future.

Regarding the problems with the deck for the U-6, I have recived some pictures of the boat in pre war configuration (painted turret numbers, lifebelt ) showing that the U-6 at some point was equipped with an all steel deck.

Now that could have been pretty annoying as I wanted to do the boat as a spring ´41 boat - looking at more pictures I have decided to conclude (for my sanitys sake ) that the all steel deck was a shortlived test fitting, as pictures from the construction of the boat shows it with a framework just like wooden decked boats and wartime photos indicate that it was later refitted with a wooden deck ....

So, I´m happy - I guess "imagineering" was Jay´s word for it - thanks mate !

Not much to report - progess is slow due to a awfull lot of "real life" intruding and that the build has reached the stage, where its a lot of small fiddly details that takes a lot of time, but little effect...

Anyway, the deck has been glued on, the innerhull recieved a wash and some drybrushing, and now its all covered up ...

I have cleaned up the railing and added the "seats" seen on the piece of railing around the deckgun, then the pieces got a basecoat and some light gray. The railing is cast in metal and look quite nice and is good to work with - not so flimsy like styrene or resin.

I drilled out the holes and added railing supports and the wire.

I have allso done the 20 mm deck gun, its a merry mix of styrene, resin and metal. It looks ok, but a replacement barrel is worth considering.

Railing and wire added, as you can see I have given it a light wash on the hul. The boats generally looks clean and wellkept, propably because its training wessels that didn´t see much frontline duty except in the first waryear. I will go light on weatering.

Thanks Jim, sorry for the late reply and the lack of activity on this blog, but its getting crowded in my calender - loads of social events up to christmass, nice but bad on the modelling

One of my prime concerns of this kit was the look of the propellers, the pitch looked all wrong, so I have been looking around for replacements, but due to the small diameter of these propellers I have had no luck - but a small conversion did the trick - I cut off the blades, sanded the spinner smooth, filed out the blade with a round file - see the mid blad on the first pic, and glued them back on with superglue.

Much more realistic pitch. Going to sand the edge of the blades a bit to give them a sharp edge.

Getting ready with a crew, Preiser luftwaffe figures, CNK and a Warrior figure makes up the crew.

The hatch for the resque equipment, a bit in doubt about the colors being ok for a ´41 boat, but some of my referances shows 2 color paintjobs even late in war .. anyway - it looks nice

Antenna, insulators buildt up over several times with superglue.

Hi Jan

very nice!! sadly not my scale but I like it anyway

Could you do me a favour? .... please change the title of your image from "Einbaüme" to "Einbaum" (wich is singular and correct for just one boat) .... BTW the Plural isn't correct either.

cheers

Hi Jan,

Fantastic job. Your corrections, additions and painting are first class. They really improve the kit and make it look like a real Type II.

Thanks Rui and Dougie! - and just when I thought I was finished, I decided to do the propeller and diveplane guards - is seems to be poles attached loosely with 3 wires. Propably detachable when you leave harbour.

So still some painting to do.

Hi Jan,

Another excellent job on your "Texas" sized fleet of U Boats and Submarines. I will try and not make you blush, but it is some of the nicest representations of subs that I have seen in a while.
