Ahoy Shipmates,

While most modeling subjects seem to have any number of monthly and bi monthly magazines dedicated to them, our favorite subject seems to be sort of out there in left field for some reason. While popular modeling magazines do have the occassional ship related articles, I am only aware of one that is dedicated to ship models in particular, for the life of me the title escapes me at the moment, but I have seen it at the local hobby shop once in a while.

I subscribe to Sea Classics magazine from Challenge Publishing as one of my favorite sources for ideas as well as some reference. I was wondering if any of you out there have others that I may have missed?

While on that subject, this months issue has a free pullout calendar for 2009, an article on post war Destroyer Escorts, the Regia Marina of WWII, presidential hopeful John McCains' time on board the USS Forrestal, the mystery of the Rio Pasig, and an ariticle on Fred T. Jane, the founder of Janes' weapons annuals. Did you know that he got his starting interest in ships in wargaming?

So, if any of you mates have any favorites in the publishing world that are dedicated to our particular subject matter, I sure would be interested in hearing about them.

Ahoy Again Shipmates,

I have discovered the other Ship Modeling Magazine that I was looking about for in the LHS today. It is Seaways' Ships in Scale, a bimonthly publication from Seaways' Publishing.

While it has a number of articles mostly related to wooden ships, there are the odd articles on plastic and resin offerings, a book review section as well as a kits and tools review section. Another section titled Shipwrights' Apprentice deals with detailing techniques on scratchbuilding and kit detailing. The occassional plan and detailed build articles round out the subject matter.

I have also discovered that they have their back issues available on CD for those who would like to get into the subjects they deal with in greater detail. Needless to say, I did fire off a years' subscription to see what it could offer and am considering the back issue CDs as well.

As a side note, I joined the IPMS to be able to obtain their bi monthly newsletter to see what it may contain for those of us interested in ships and boats. I have noticed a few members from here are also over there as well. Unfortunately for some reason their forum site is currently down, issues with their ISP is what they are saying for the moment.

As I stated before in the previous post, I am interested in hearing from all of you concerning any ship related magazines that would be of interest. From the detailed books that are coming from overseas, I am sure that there must be one or two out there someplace as well. I would be interested in hearing about them even if they are in another language. With the wealth of Japanese magazines and books coming down the pike to fill in details from their side of the rock, I am surprised that no one has come up with anything from over there.

I like Sea Classics too. Also, I check the various WW2 magazines for good naval articles.

Hi Kenny,

I get the WWII History magazine, lots of good stuff in there. I tried the History Channels' magazine, but most of the articles in there while interesting to some degree, didn't cover that much about Naval History and seemed to shoot themselves in the foot once in a while with some of their facts relating to WWII history and sort of skims over subjects not giving any real detail. I also tried Smithsonians' Magazine, while it does contain some interesting stuff and I did find the article about the ancient Chinese fleet there, it sort of comes up short in other areas of Naval History. National Geographic does a bang up job when ever they delve into WWII and Naval History as well with some pretty happening photographs, diagrams and information as well as links to other areas of our favorite subject.

I thought of this post as a sort of way to point myself and the rest of the crew to areas where we could all benefit from what is out there in print, so if any of you have any other suggestions........
