Russian Navy to hold exercises in the Mediterranean in November

A naval task force from Russia's Northern Fleet will depart from its main base in Severomorsk in early November to participate in joint drills with the Black Sea Fleet in the Mediterranean, a senior Navy official said on Thursday. "The task force from the Northern Fleet (headed by the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier) will join a naval task force from the Black Sea Fleet headed by the Moskva missile cruiser in the Mediterranean and conduct exercises simulating a sea battle between two opposing naval task forces," the source said.

The group of warships from the Northern Fleet will spend a total of three months on the upcoming tour of duty in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

"The main goals of the tour are to accomplish a number of operative and strategic tasks, to demonstrate Russia's presence in the world's oceans, and to pay visits to foreign ports," the official said, adding that the Moskva missile cruiser, for instance, would call at the port of Messina in Sicily.

A task force from the Northern Fleet, consisting of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the Udaloy class destroyers Admiral Levchenko and Admiral Chabanenko, as well as auxiliary vessels, conducted from December 2007 to February 2008 a two-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic.

General Dynamics NASSCO Delivers USNS Amelia Earhart
Source: General Dynamics NASSCO press release

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, today delivered USNS Amelia Earhart (T-AKE 6) to the U.S. Navy. The ship is named in honor of the record-setting aviator.

"The Amelia Earhart is another high-quality, extremely capable ship delivered by the NASSCO team," said Frederick J. Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. "We have reduced the man-hours to build this sixth ship of the T-AKE class by nearly 50 percent when compared to the production time of the lead ship. This is among the most efficient shipbuilding performances in the United States for a class of complex ships."

Construction of the USNS Amelia Earhart began in December 2006. NASSCO has incorporated international marine technologies and commercial ship-design features into T-AKE class ships, including an integrated electric-drive propulsion system, to minimize operating costs during their projected 40-year service life. With a cargo capacity of more than 10,000 tons, the primary mission of T-AKE ships is to deliver food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions from shore stations to combat ships at sea.

NASSCO has delivered the first five ships of the T-AKE class and has construction contracts for five additional ships, including the Amelia Earhart. The Navy has options to build four additional T-AKE ships for a total of 14 vessels. The seventh through tenth ships of the T-AKE class are currently under construction at NASSCO and are scheduled for deliveries through the third quarter of 2010.

General Dynamics NASSCO employs more than 4,800 people and is the only major ship construction yard on the West Coast of the United States. The San Diego shipyard is also building the first three of nine product carriers for U.S. Shipping Partners L.P.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Va., employs approximately 85,600 people worldwide. The company is a market leader in business aviation; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and information systems and technologies.
