hello all,
i have decided to do what i call a "fun build".with this kit i am going to learn how to do:PE,different painting techniques and weathering.
the kit i am using is the Trumpeter SS Jeremiah O'Brien in 1/350 scale.i also bought Tom's Modelworks Liberty Ship PE in 1/350.

and some of the parts in the kit.

and the PE

i will post updates as soon as i get more progress done.
any and all suggestions, comments, and criticisms are more then welcomed.
cheers,
Bruce

Go Bruce Go!

I look forward to your progress. I have Sky Waves' 1/700 offering of a Liberty Ship as well as Toms' PE for it so this will be an opportunity to see how well the big brother goes together.

hello Jay,
thanks for the encouragement.i have glued the 2 deck pieces together, and the seam is showing on both sides of the parts.i dry fitted them and they went together OK,so it looks like i am going to have to put some filler in the seams.
one of the problems i forsee is remembering to check the PE instructions so i do not forget to use it on some of the parts.
next update with photo's in a day or two.
cheers,
Bruce

Coming back to the bench with a vengeance, eh, mate?...a Community Build, Pre-Dred Campaign Build, and now, this fine newbie! You got yer hands full (both of them now ) Bruce!

I'll be watching this WIP close, Bruce, as I too have this kit in the stash, destined to become a conversion to the SS Lombard, and by hosting this BLOG, you can help to pinpoint any downfalls along the way...

Hi Bruce

Good choice!
I must admit that this model is one of my 1/350 Ships (I have about.... six!)
As Jay, also have the PitRoad/Skywave one
I want to leave you with some reference photos, taken by yours truly while on a vacation to the US West Coast (back in 2005)

USS Jeremiah O'Brian Walkaround

Hope this helps
Keep up!

hello all,
@Mark,
thanks for the encouragement.as all of you know,i not the best kit builder.but i spent alot of time reading Mike Ashley's ship building books and spent a ton of money on modeling equipment and items(brass rods, styrene sheets, razor saws, etc.)and this will be a long learning process for me.i am hoping to take my modeling to the next level.besides the kits you stated,i also have a Tiger 1,and some German airborne figures to do.
@Rui
thanks for the link to the walk around and your encouragement.it is now in my favorites for quick reference.
there should be an update posted by tomorrow, along with the photo's on the deck seams.
cheers,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I usually pop a copy of the Kit and PE instructions so I can mark both of them up to remind myself about the PE adjustments that I have to make. A set of colored markers makes it easy to cross reference from one set to the other without having to do a lot of work later on when you are in the middle of things. Ain't nothing worse than having to fiddle something in later that you could have dealt with earlier in the build when it is so much easier, not to mention taking the chance at knocking other things loose that you already have in place.

Thanks for the link Rui, it will come in handy for future reference.

Looking forward to yoru build Bruce! I have the John Brown in my stash, waiting for the next version of "no guns allowed" type of GB. That PE fret looks sweet! Cheers!

Rui - great pic, is that "oil canning" (?) ruffling of the hull? What a challenge to reproduce on a model!

Hi Bruce,

I am getting the little Photobucket box that states that "this image or video has been moved or deleted", rather than the pictures as well. I use them as well for my photoposting needs too, I will have to go check on my stuff now as well. Hope you get it lined out, wanna see them pix.

Hi Bruce,

Yeppers, I can see them now, gaps big enough to throw a cat through!

Time to break out the Squadron Putty or Bondo or something. I am surprised that the parts fit that badly, Trumpeter sure dropped the ball there. Looking forwards to seeing you cure those and carry on.

Yes sir. That is some nasty looking seams. When you fill them, mask off each side of the seam and then fill with putty. Pull the tape off straight away. This way you have very little to sand.

hello all,
thanks for the advice.i think that the pieces were warped just a little.when i dry fitted them they were perfect.once the glue dried you could see that they were just a little off .
next is to fill in the small gaps and sand .
more updates next week.
cheers,
Bruce

Bruce, do you use ProWeld or Tamiya's Extra Thin liquid cement? Those dry fairly quickly.

Hobby Lobby carries ProWeld. You can also order it online from MicroMark.

I think Tenax is also that type of "welding" glue. But I think those seams are a tad too large for 'welding" glue? good luck either way!

Hey Bruce

Looking good, you just have to correct those seams
Also, could I ask you to correct the first image url's?
This way members could get lost

Cheers and keep up!
