I have the Nautilus wood flight deck for the Lexington and would like some pointers on how to finish it in deck blue stain? I want to build Trump kit of CV-2 just prior to Coral Sea Battle in May 1942. I'm a NFG to ship models and need some help.

Hi Mike,

I would use WEM US11 Fight Deck Stain. Thin this down between 70-90% depending on the intensity of the you wish to achieve, then apply it one coat at a time until it looks about right.

I would not use an acrylic based paint as this would tend to raise the wood fibers.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Harry, I just ordered the paint from you. I have always wanted to try WEM paints but I didn't know who carried them. I am now one of your customers. what should I thin WEM with for the deck stain # 11? Thanks again.

WAIT! WRONG STAIN!

Lex was wearing Norfolk 250-N Flight Deck Stain (that's WEM US 27) when lost. Flight Deck Stain 21 did not come into use until late 1942/early 1943: Essex was the first carrier to commission using the new stain color.
