Hi there,

I could really use some help and advice on choosing a good modelling subject. I've haven't buildt a model ship since I was a kid... Tirpitz as far as I remember.
I've been modelling AFV's the last 20 years or so. But now I would like to take on a model ship for a chance.

Could you recommend a good model? Except for some PE, I would like a model that will do well "out of the box". And resonable easy to build for a ship novice.

My main interest is Royal Navy WWI... And the scale 1/350. But I would not mind any other suggestions.

Best regards,

Bjoern

Hi Bjørn,

When I needed a change from all that armorstuff, I choose submarines In 1:72 to begin with, I didn´t feel up to the challange of doing alle the fine details and even PE on something I can hardly see - I have a Sovremenny in 1:350 wainting untill I feel ready for it.

But then again, it won´t be WWI and knowing you, doing something in 1:350 wont be a problem for you.

Anyway, wellcome to the wet element

Hi Bjørn!

Well... I understand your request, but that's not going to be easy....
If you're looking to injection WWI Royal Navy subjects.... = Zero!

I could on the other side, suggest a british built battleship= IJN Mikasa in 1/350 from Hasegawa.
If you want to go OOB it will make a good display model, and you have two versions to chose from, Yellow Sea or Tsushima Battles.
And if you want to tide it up, there are a few PE sets, from simpler ones to very thorough...

Also in the same scale, also good OOB with some extra work would be SMS Emden from Revell

Hope this helps your naval project, and please keep us posted on updates or questions
Cheers,
Rui

Welcome to the nautical side! It's not RN or WW I, but I just finished the Tamiya 1/350 Fletcher Class DD. While I chose to totally modify the kit in several major ways as well as extensive PE and after market items, I was impressed with the overall quality of the kit and it would make a great OOB build to get started.

Bjoern,
If you can wait a while Trumpeter are releasing the battlecruiser HMS Repulse.
Not as built in WW1 maybe but still a WW1 vintage RN ship.
As for your other questions about OOB and ease of build your guess is as good as anyone elses at the moment.

Trumpeter's 1/350th Destroyer Escort USS England could be built in Royal Navy WWII service as well, they were labeled the Captain Class Frigate:

While not as nice as the Dragon Buchanan, it is extremely build able and a good first kit, in my opinion.
