To be honest I am not totally sure, but I am sure you will WOW us again!

On a personal note, a harbor scene would be interesting.

Yes on allmost all accounts, its German, its Alangers 1:72 XXIII that I got for free, Its not born as a waterline, but a saw fixed that, and it will be a harbourscene.

Not sure about the bunker part, the boat in it self measures 50 cm. so including a bunker would make a huge diorama.

I am going to rebuilt it to one of the first boats, it lacked the ladder on the front of the tower, instead it had cutouts for steps in the casing. Theres other differences and all sums up to, that I have to do the inner details in the turret and other opdates.

I have a Andrea crew ready - some preiser, CMK and Warrior to populate it, som trucks, and a general idea about the lay out - lots of delightfull scrathsbuilding to do

Hmmm, I believe that you have been bitten BAD by the sub bug, Mr. Klarbęk! (which is a GREAT thing, isn't it? )....Jan, your past works have been admirable, my friend, and I'm sure that this one will be as well, as you continue to pump out quality, accurate renditions of the variants that you decide to build...Bravo Zulu, mate, full steam ahead!

Bitten - yes, badly - very

This time i“m going to combine a sub with one of my favorites - construction of a diorama.

I even have a VII C in the stash for the camoflage campain and a few midgets from FineMolds - Would like to do a VII D too .....

In between painting the crew for my IIA i have been working a bit on this kit. Cut the other hullhalf and glued it on a sheet of styrene to make it more stable

Only one hull side glued on, added some support pieces and made room for the inner hull, which is done seperately so i can paint the detailing in the turret.

Heres the inner hull in place - I have some experience doing the cunningtower from my last XXIII build, and since I am doing one of the early versions, there will be a lot more openings in the turret, so some inside detailing is a must!

With my II A more or less done , still some nit-picking to do, I have turned my attention to this little boat, which I am going to back date to one of the early boats the U2322.

The 2321 and 2322 is wery much alike, but there are differences, and only have pictures of 21 from starboard and of 22 from port - so some educated guesswork is needed

The 21 and 22 are unique in that they dont have the steps to climb the tower in front but instead have cutouts in the sides. It makes the casing around the cunningtower very "transparant" so adding the interior details is a must.

I have begun the starboard side, and heres a comparison with the port side:

And a closeup:

My only referance is "Vom Original zum Model" and its a great book, but I would like some more on these early boats - so suggestions are wellcome!

Cheers/Jan

Hi Jan

You are on the right route, you are being very thorough and paying attention to the smallest details, so... this is going to be a great model!
As for references, I have a couple more books but they are generic on U-boots, and since I have a dozen of U-boot books borrowed to Filipe, made my search fruitless. The essential book (at least from what I recall) on Typ XXIII is the "Von Original zum Modell", but you could get lucky with a photo or more on other publications. I'll see if I can find something that could help you.

Keep up

Thanks Rui, that would be nice - I think my prime challenge is the inside of the bridge - since the nav lights is missing on 22 the layout is propably much different from the production line.

Jay, thanks - it will be a slow mover for the next few weeks, as we are leaving for USA on monday to spend the christmas with the family in Pennsylvania.

Hollidays are over, back to the hard work at the yard, the frontline is screaming for the new subs - the "Wunderwaffen" !

I have been working on the port (lefthand) side of the boat, doing all the different floodholes and steps to the bridge and added some shape to the exhaust:

And I have done a simpel version of the inner hull with the different fittings in the sail. Even if the sail is perforated with floodholes, its still limited how many details that will be visible, besides my referances is somewhat lacking on this part of the boat, so this will have to do.

Great work, Jan! Those interior items will really add depth to the model's final appearance! BTW, I like your MaK (SF3D) avatar.

Ahoy Jan,

Glad I only build the little ones, all those holes would drive me nuttier than Grandmas' Fruitcake. XXIII is coming along nicely, looking forward to more as you go along.

Thanks mates!

Glued the hullsides together yesterday, not worth taking pictures of - and begun filling and sanding the joins - lot to do to get a decent fit.

Next step will be hull and bridge details.

A question to you guys - how to display the sub:

1) harbour scene - the boat comming to quay with a few vehiacles and buildings (size talks against it and the scene would move focus from the boat)

2) on patrol (more simple and with full focus on the boat)

3) harbour - at quay, more simple layout on quay

The first would be quite big...

Hi Jan

Although not completely accurate I would go for option 2 (on patrol)
The scene would be simpler, the focus would be on the u-boot, small display are.

Also you can have some crew on the ct and make the scene feasible!

The quay / Harbor would distract the viewer of what really matter: the submarine!

Looking very good - keep up
