Just picked up the Revell PT-109 kit and before I start the build phase, would like to get some info in the type of boat. Any help would be great. Also seeking what I could inprove on and add to the kit. Any type of replacement or PE kits for this model?
Thank you
Sam

Ahoy, Sam, Welcome to Modelshipwrights!
Ah, the PT bug hath bitten, you, eh, mate?....a great starting point would be this recent feature from T. Garth Connelly, here....and I'm sure that you will find many other helpful suggestions in our archives as well, my friend...take some time and peruse our archives, you won't be disapointed, and please, keep us posted of your build as well!
Cheers,
~Gunny

Hi Sammuel,
We have a number of items designed for that kit. First, our PE 7205 provides photoetched details. We also offer the 37mm US Army cannon that the 109 boat (and a number of others) carried, item PE 7216. PE 7217 is the 40mm Single Bofors that many PTs carried as they entered the barge-busting role. PE 7221 provides the later Mk.13 torpedoes and roll-off racks that replaced the earlier torpedo tubes on most boats. PE 7222 gives you the 37mm M4 Cannon that many boats carried on the forecastle as they up-gunned. If you want to replace the kit 20mm Oerlikon, or add more depending on which boat you're modelling, you can use our PE 7234. And if you're doing a diorama and need some extra Mk.14 torpedoes for loading into the kit's original tubes, you can order PE 7239. You'll find all those items here:
http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_1_72_Scale_Photo_Etch_22.html
Besides those items, we have all the USN paint colors worn by the PTs accurately matched and available in our Colourcoats line of enamels.

Your web page comes highly recommended. I have never worked with PE. I'm kind of worried about it. Doing my research and will contact you.

Samuel,
Welcome aboard!
Our site recently completed a Small Craft Group Build, that contained some PT boats and information that may be of use. I am building a small almost OOB effort, and found the following info during my research, hope it helps!
PS The WEM PE set for this kit is universally lauded for its quality. Some day I will tackle this one again the proper way with all goodies, including the WEM set.
A build using the WEM set and colourcoats paints:

large scale PT for RC, includes some plans:

T. Garth Connelly's excellent PT boat research web site:

Thank you so much with the info. I will keep you posted on the build. I want to take my time with it, and make it look as real as I can.

Sammuel,
don't panic on the PE. It's a great tool and the effect is beautiful, and WEM are tops, Aces, A-1.
PE seems scary, but isn't really. Not that you won't have tiny parts fold in crunches, or spring across the room and disappear into holes in reality and go to another universe, but it's worth it. CA (superglue), rounded pointy toothpics, and read up on PE advice. But definitely worth the trouble!

Agreed!
Also Sam, try and find the volume of ALLIED COASTAL FORCES dealing with torpedo boats. And try and find a copy of Victor Chun's book on PTs ..........
Also, NOT to plug myself but - if you can - it's out of print presently - find a copy of my own PT BOATS IN ACTION.
