I get mine at either Wal-Mart or Micheal's. They have different sizes and are ready to stain.
As for online, I am not sure.

Bruce,
Pegaso and a few companies make very nice prefinished bases. They get a bit pricey but depending on what you got in mind they look nice.
I've bought a few, but most of the time I just do the Walmart or Micheal's display thing and just stain it myself. I'm cheap like that.
Check out this line for pre-finished bases

Give me an Idea of what you're looking for and I can make it..... (size, specie of wood and or color, and edge detail ie. roundover, chamfer, ogee, etc)
Woodworking is my other hobby.

Looks like Matt beat me to it.
I’ve seen some of his work and he knows what he’s doing.
From what I've seen many of the places you can get bases from seem to be a bit overpriced for what you get.

Probably was.
As for the finishing you could always try putting under a box to dry.
Of course you’d still be better going with someone like me or Matt but if you do ever need to finish something.

Hi Bruce
First, I must say that I am posting this with no interest what so ever, only spreading the word.
Here there are two wooden bases:
The top one, is made by Jacob and sent has a Xmas gift. It's Cherry wood and very nicely done.
The bottom one is one of my regularly bought, made of Mahogany.
I usually use this bases for 1/35 manned torpedoes or midget subs and for 1/700 small vessels (frigates, destroyers, subs)
Hope this helps everyone!
Rui
PS: Thanks Jacob - you've got a PM

Thanks Rui.
But I will point out the comparison there is between a finished base and an unfinished base.
The mahogany should (I hope) darken and brighten up with a natural finish. However it would also make the 3 mismatched pieces much more noticeable.
But I will say I kinda like the beaded round over on the mahogany base.
Rui do you mind if i ask what one of those mahogany bases cost?

Sure can Jacob!
These Mahogany untreated wooden bases cost about €10.00, which in today currency converter rates, makes it about US$14.00
As with my other bases, I still have to coat it with varnish, and place a velvet like self adhesive sheet underneath (to prevent damaging the furniture here and also helps the base "stick" to tables at model events) and then it will look like this:
Hope this helps

Well Assuming that its african mahogany thats actually not to bad.
Doing a quick estimate here I would probably charge about $12 to $13 for one out of mahogany that size. (Of course mine would be a single piece.)
But of course mahoganies one of my more expensive woods. Something like maple would only run about $5 to $6.

Mick,
A good source of pre-stained and finished bases are trophy shops.
They generally keep good stock of many shapes and sizes and
can be purchased as non trophy items.
Cheers,
Joe
