Rui,

Do you recall our old thread of messages concerning water effects under one of my Features?

I've been experimenting with your technique, I think it is, using Liquitex acrylic gel and varying colors of blue and green. I still need to put a close coat of it all. I forgot about that before taking the photos.

This is a 4 inch by 4 inch board. Ignore the unfinished Sumner model, its a reject from a previous build.

This is a 1/350 PBM-5 Mariner from ISW. Its not finished, either.

Very realistic as far as the texture, the waves, the separation etc.The painting is also very well done and in scale. My only argument would be that since i presume is rather deep water then you would see a uniform color when look from above i.e one shade of blue or blue/green or whatever the color of your choice is.If this is meant to be shallow water then is one of the best i have seen. Its almost like a painting coming alive.Very atmospheric.

Nicely done Carl,

Easy to see the effects of different lighting conditions on the photos. The last photo to me seems to be the most saturated and I presume the closest to what the base looks like.

thanks for sharing,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, Gentlemen.

Very good point, Kostas, concening the deep vs. shallow water. You're right. I plan to experiment a lot more with this technique. I did get a little carried away with the Monet effect, didn't I?

Someday, I'd like to build a PT Boat Tender (AGP) (USS Oyser Bay maybe) diorama in 1/350 with at least 8 PT Boats or so, and maybe incorporate a flying boat, as well. Something like this:

This base is actually about 5x7 inches and not 4x4 as I previously stated, but that's not a big deal. I just wanted to correct that aspect.

Frank,
I think that the camera angle makes a difference with the "saturation" effect. Good eye!

Rui is on deck

Carl,

I think it is a great leap on your water bases! I really love the swell / bad weather atmosphere you have achieved!
Even with the color issue raised by Kostas, on a really bad weather, even in deep waters, it can be very similar to this effect.

I really liked it!
Now, the BIG question:
Are you going to put a sub on periscope depth and a plane/helicopter on this base?

Thanks, Rui!

I've got some PHM Pegasus', the PBM, but I don't have any more subs on hand. How about a 1/700 orange life ring with nobody in it? Sounds like "Best of Show" at the contest, to me!

Well, it is a very original situation
Looking forward to see the Pegasus in the water - is it a remake of your Pegasus dio?

I really don't intend to put anything on this particular base. I would like to make a PBM-5 Mariner dio, though. I'll make a better base for it, someday soon I think, and re-paint or re-build the PBM. Maybe a lighter blue-gray color, instead of the dark blue PBM.

Carl,

Nice base & water effects; and Rui's sub-hunter idea is pretty good.

I do have one question: what are you using for a backdrop? Looks like clouds.

Thanks Jim!

The background is the top half of a poster. Its of a calm cloudy evening/morning near what looks to be New England lighhouse and rocky shore. I cut of the rocks, cliffs and lighthouse part.
