First pics of my Revell/Matchbox 1/72 corvette, being made as HMS Cowslip. I chose that ship because it's the only RN one with the correct bridge/mast configuration that I could make using the kit decals for the pennant numbers!
Having read Monseratt's 'Three Corvettes' and 'The Cruel Sea' since I was a kid I've always wanted to model a ship as a beaten-up and rusty North Atlantic Convoy escort, so here it is. Hull only so far. I've tried to portray the heavy rusting that occurred even if a freshly painted ship did just a couple of North Atlantic runs, together with the growth and staining on the waterline and below.
I like the effect, but have I gone too far?
PS: I'm working to a tight budget, so only kit parts and the paints I can mix from my current stock.

Hi Dave!
Just like with modeling amphibious vehicles, it's probably impossible to over-weather a corvette!
Be thankful you didn't choose an iced-over depiction....
When the Divine Waterline campaign starts in September, I'll get started on backdating my Matchbox kit to HMS Periwinkle.

Thanks Karl
Currently I'm trying to work between two sets of instruction sheets (the Revell ones are in a more logical build order than the originals) and two rather blurry photos. Cowslip went through at least two rebuilds and numerous repaints, with armament changes etc. so it's a bit of a nightmare trying to sort out the stage that I'm building her at.
Re: Icing up - one of my future projects, space/finance/swmbo permitting is a 1/700 diorama with an escort vessel and a merchantman "shipping it green" and with ice etc on the rigging. As a corvette would "roll on wet grass" it should make for some crazy angles!!!
