thank you..! just maybe..if you will weather just a little bit of the battleship gray...and add the labels. it will well compliment the PT boat and the wood base. same weathering style as what you did on the boat. i like the weathering on the boat..very nice. another thing....did you used clear adhesive tapes on the ropes? took me awhile to perfected them. thanks again and cheers. ed

awesome work! i hope mine turns out at least half that nice!

as for the life vest. in some of the pictures i've seen of pt boats, it seems the crew would hang them from the rails along the top edge of the day room and i've seen a few pics of vests hanging from the 50 cal cages. but if you don't want to use the vests you have, let me know and i would be very happy to buy them from you!

Ed,
Sorry to take so long getting back to you, I've been away. The way I did the ropes took some trial and error but eventually they turned out well. I glued a piece of plastic tube to a sheet of thick plastic. I then covered the area around the tube with double sided tape and began wrapping the rope around the tube. Once I had the rope coil as large as I wanted I used an acrylic matt liquid from the art store. I thinned it and allowed a thin coat of it to soak into the rope. After drying for about 24 hours I VERY carefully pried the coil from the tape. I used the same matt medium to stick it down to the deck. By the second coil it was pretty easy. I probably haven't made that very clear but I'll see if I can post some pictures of the process once I get home from work.

Does anyone know what these cans are? I believe that they are ammo cans for the .50s but I'm not positive. I thought that I had seen them in "They Were Expendable" but now I can't find the scene. If someone could point me in the direction of a picture I'd be very appreciative. The piece in the photo came from the U-Model detail set PT Boat Accessories.
Thanks

Hello Shane, I was just looking in Squadron's "PT Boats in action" and on page 44 there is a photo of an unidentified boat on the bottom right of the page. In this photo there appears to be four of those containers racked aft, on the starboard side, just forward of the 40mm mount. There seem to be two more stowed against the engine room ventilator. I still don't know what they are, but it definitely looks to me that they are the same as the containers in your photo. The arrangement of equipment on this particular boat is unusual. The smoke generator on the fantail is mounted more inboard than usual, with two depth charges mounted aft of it. There also appears to be an additional depth charge stowed in the starboard after torpedo rack. I hope this helps you out. Al

I looked at the photo last night ...

I THINK (but I COULD be mistaken) those were the 'cases' that the 40mm clips were shipped in.

Either that? Or, could they just be some jerry-cans bunched up together and covered up with a tarp?

Hello Garth, I don't think they are 5 gallon cans, they are too tall and too rectangular. But you could be right about them being some kind of container for 40mm clips. They are located in a convenient place for the 40mm crew to reach. Al

Hi Al

Searching in google I found few pics about 40 mm bofor amunitions here:

http://images.google.com.ar/imgres?imgurl=http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k227/ramc181/bofbox.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.wwiireenacting.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D123%26t%3D43907&usg=__ueugHJvxFvsbibZys7SjDysN_QU=&h=799&w=557&sz=83&hl=es&start=16&um=1&tbnid=2AFr8zstcE75kM:&tbnh=143&tbnw=100&prev=/images%3Fq%3D40%2Bmm%2Bamo%2Bbox%26hl%3Des%26um%3D1

It's looks like the object is a case for amunition in cardboard-cased container (perhaps crew put in clips later)
I hope this help you

Hello Gustavo, I looked at the site you posted and it does look like those 40mm ammo containers are what they were trying to represent in Shane's photo. It seems like they got the general shape right but missed the mark somewhat in the details. Thanks for your help. Al

Al,

Regarding your comments about the depth charges and the smoke generator?

Yeup, I've seen a lot of photos of different boats having that configuration. PT-171 and PT-191 for example are two boats that I know of ...
