Ahoy Mates,

Does anyone here know what colors the Wilhelm Bauer (former U type XXI) would have been painted in during the 1960's? From the box art and at least one other photo I found in a XXI book, it seemed like it was dark gray on the visible portion of the hull and on the conning tower. Any ideas???

As long as I'm asking about the Wilhelm Bauer, does anyone know the correct hull colors for a Chinese type 33???

1. Can not help you with the chinese colors. Maybe someone else fills in or you may start a new thread.

2. Regarding the Wilhelm Bauer you may want to gain a personal impression by looking at these pictures:

Other than that, the Bundesmarine (=German Navy) generally used colors according to RAL specification.
For this you may find the following information interesting:

Light coloring:
Bridge, Hull, all horizintal superstructure: RAL 7035
Decks: RAL 7012
Demarcation Line arround CWL: RAL 9005
Under water hull/ship: RAL 3009

Dark coloring:
Bridge, Hull, all horizintal superstructure: RAL 7000
Decks: RAL 7012
Demarcation Line arround CWL: RAL 9005
Under water hull/ship: RAL 3000

As for the Wilhelm Bauer in that time period it does not seem to be RAL 7000 nor RAL 7035.

However RAL 7000 equals to

• Hobby Color - Gunze Sangyo No. H337
  
• Humbrol No. 145
  
• Revell No. 57
  
• Testors / Model Master No. 1721
  

RAL 7035 equals to

• Hobby Color - Gunze Sangyo No. H338
  
• Humbrol No. 196
  
• Revell No. 371
  

I am discussing this on a german board and may come up with something more detailed. Don´t hold your breath though.
Personally I feel like the Wilhelm Bauer has been painted RAL 7012 which equals to

• Humbrol No. 78
  
• Revell No. 77 / 378
  

Please take the reference to other manufacturers paints as an approximation.
