Hi thrillseekers

I want to start a project and I'm assuming it would be largely scratchbuilt unless someone can point me towards some kits that may be of help.

For a model contest which will have a theme of 'water warfare', I have in mind a diorama in which a 12 pound naval field gun and associated limber and naval troops are being offloaded from a whaleboat or cutter to participate in the refief of Ladysmith during the Boer war.

The local navy reserve unit (HMCS Tecumseh in Calgary) has loaned their gun and limber to a museum here and I'll get pics of it as soon as I can but it's basically this type here:

These guns are still around (ref. the museum gun above) and are used as saluting pieces and in gun-run style competitions.

Anyone know where I can start with kits, plans or other related historical reference data/images?

thanks in advance...

Bob

Hi Bob

I think that Mountford Models ( Mountford's ) produce a 12pdr. They also appear to produce Royal Tournament-type gun team, as well as Jack Tar gunners/ shore party.

They're not the most sophisticated figure models in the world but are of a reasonable standard, and of subject matter not covered elsewhere.

Cheerski

No worries Bob - it's my pleasure.

Many years ago, when I was a cocky young 'un I worked (at the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol) with the guy that now owns the Mountford castings. After nearly twenty years, its nice to finally send hime some business .

Cheers

Karol

I've since had an update from Peter Tarrant of Tarrants Toy Soldiers and he tells me that he doesn't have any of the gun kits anymore and that Mountford himself had sold the Victoriana kits and the later gun kits to some folks who have all but disappeared. No one seems to know where they might be or what's become of the gun model kits.

I'm afraid I'm back to square one. Any other thoughts or ideas?

cheers

Bob

Bob

I'm sorry you didn't have any luck with this - I feel your disappointment.

I've had a quick look around and came up with nothing. All I can suggest is that you try Tradition of London - they might have something, or at least be able to point you a direction. You might also try your luck with the BMSS - if nothing else they're bound to point you in the direction of some nice technical drawings of this piece.

I'm really sorry I can't be more helpful - keep us posted on how you get on.

Cheers

Karol
