Hello there, just recieved my 1-700 diorama submarine Lenin, all written in Japinese and can't get heads or tails what colour this is suppose to be, the box art (if correct) shows this as a dark matt gull grey with a red under belly, any completed models would be great to have a look at, or simply the correct colour, and please in Revell or Humbrol paint please.

Hello Alec
Russian submarines during Cold War were usually black... you can paint a very dark grey (one a little darker than panzer grey, or use a NATO Black or Tyre Black) and than give a black wash, so that any of the hull details can be shown.
A red (similar to Anti-fouling Red) is applied the bottom half way of the hull... In this case (Alfa, or Project 705) from the photos I have with full hull, it don't depict any of the usual silver sonar areas - although I am seeing most of B/W photos.
Reference books:
Russian Submarines - Guardians of the Motherland (Wayne Frey)
Soviet and Russian Nuclear Submarines (Wilfried Kopenhagen)
Submarines of the Russian and Soviet Navies, 1718-1990 (Norman Polmar and Jurrien Noot)
Soviet Submarines - 1945 to the Present (John Jordan)
[Being the two latest books published right just after the fall of the Berlin wall, the info was very limited...]
I wonder if it is the Arii one?
Hope this helps,
Cheers
Rui

Hi Alec
Interesting... I was not aware that these Arii subs came with a sea scape base.
Try not to go fast on it... It can turn these in a very good presentation.
Google some images of submarines running on surface and also, some good model representations of similar situations on our Feature (submarines). Modelwarships.com also have very good guys with similar situations.
Although not submarine related you can read this post: [url=http://modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net/forums/132306&page=1]Rui Wanted an Update/url]
Me and Carl Musselman discussed the water part of a dio
Keep us posted, please

Hello there, the sea effect while offering a good base for a diorama, also leaves a rather large hole behind, so simply, I filled this with gel which will dry clear, once this has completely gone off, I'll then address the problem of bow waves and white-tip waves, so I'd like to believe, funny thing though, as I am writing this, I honestly don't like submarines, as there never seems that much to do with them, on my right is the photo of ModelExpo IJ Sub C-3 (class) 1-53 which really does look nice all painted and weathered, anyway, back to my Project 705 -

I will post more as this little diorama finishes.
