Hello there, sometime in the near future I'd like another go at building the 1-72 fast attack boat S-100, I can only assume flak 38 referrs to the huge gun on the back of this boat. While this is a good and very cheap model, for a long time there hasn't been much in the way of phototech, now with Griffon Model there's several PE sheets of brass for this kit.
With shipping the PE kit comes in at about £40.00 U.K money and while the images look great, can anyone actually tell me if this kit is as good as it looks ?Look forward to your reply.

Ahoy Al,
The basic kit will build into a very fine model out of the box with the only
concern according to some, is the props are incorrectly shaped.
Other than this, the hull and super structure are correctly shaped, no
major issues.
Of course by adding PE to this already fine model, you will create a
superb model.
I have one on the" to build" waiting list and will start as soon as my
"E-boat" is complete.

You are indeed correct about the Flak 38. The 38 is the 4 barrelled Navalised Version that the Wermacht used in WW2. It has a very good Rate of fire and packs a powerful punch. The Wermacht called it a Klakvierling 38. The 38 was the mm Diameter of each Barrel. I have the Griffon set for the other S100 Version and it would be a good 12 Month Project and isn't for the fainthearted......I must be raving mad.... ...Cheers Mark

Further info on the Revell S-100 kits armament:

Revell kit no: 5051 S-100........ original release
1 - 2cm flak 38 at the bow position
1 - 2cm flak 38 Zwilling(double) midship
1 - 3.7cm/69 M42 flak (Kriegsmarine version) at the stern position

Revell kit no: 5002 S-100 Flak....... latest release
1 - 2cm flak 38 at the bow position
1 - 2cm flak 38 Zwilling(double) midship
1_ 2cm flak 38 Vierling(quad) at the stern position

They also include the instructions in pdf form which give you some idea of what you get and how it goes together. Just be sure you you click on the Revell 1/72 entry as they also do stuff for the giant Italeri 1/35 kit.

I think 38 stands for the year the weapon was created. Ie. Pak36 was a 37mm AT gun of 1936. Pak40 a 75mm AT gun of 1940. The flak38 was a 20mm weapon.

That etched brass kit looks really good but out of my price range. Certainly looks the part though. I am presuming this would be a later model S boat with such a heavy AA armament? Having just read Coastal Convoys with most S boat action taking place in the first half of the war around the UK i dont recall reading about such heavy mounted weapons.

The 1-72 Revell S-100 and flak 38 is a good ''cheap'' model and I dare say someone with the knowledge/skill could easily build this without that huge gun on the back, for the time being, I have decided not to but the PE kit due to its somewhat complex structuring, no doubt this would make a good looking model 1st class, one other little thing I didn't know about, these S-100's also come in 1-35 ? That's got to be HUGE, and more then likely crying out for R/C.

Oh sure, thought it was common knowledge.
Yes, it is big - a full meter (40") in length.

At the local marina.....
I have picked one of these up and yes, Andrew it is huge! My copy is intended
for RC operation and will be stored on my TV wall unit. Yes I still have a
conventional TV in a conventional wall unit. No LCD or plasma for me
hanging on my wall...otherwise I would have no place to store this monster!

I have the "plain" version (kit 5051) and the Griffon's PE set. Saving those for the next "small boat/PT" group build

Above is my new 1-350 S-100 by Bronco, the 1-72 model I have built and also have another one on stand by, the PE set was my intrest not the model, at the moment due to being the same price, I've simply swapped the thought of PE into that of buying another 1-350 model (Ting Yuen).

I was very luck with the Bronco model, a couple of weeks ago, I went to the Hendon model show here in the U.K and for a while I exchanged info with a fellow member, Dean Lynch was his name and as a gift he gave me the S-100 on our meeting, can't be bad.

Besides that set, WEM has a PE fret for it and I believe thee 2.0cm and 3.7cm guns as well.

Al the Revell kit is a good base kit and with some basic scatrch building can look eve better just a case of how far you want to go with it. I built my 1/72 a couple of year ago now and put it in a dockside dio with some model railway stuff for the dock. since then I,ve built the 1/35 version and that took some time with all the additions


If you have a look in the Dockyard forum you will fine an S100 thread there with a wealth of information on the S 100 boats.
