Defense Supports Construction of Four Maritime Action Ships
Source: Spanish Ministry of Defence

The Defense Ministry will support the second series of Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM, or maritime action ships), which will involve the construction of four new ships in the Navantia shipyards in the Bay of Cadiz.

This decision is the result of the agreement reached today by Defence Minister Carme Chacon and Assistant Secretary of the Socialist parliamentary group deputy for Cadiz, Carmen Sánchez Díaz.

This agreement will be reflected in an amendment to the Law on State Budget for 2011 be submitted by the Socialist Group in the Congress of Deputies, under the budget appropriations of the Ministry of Industry to finance key programs of the Ministry of Defense.

The agreement calls for the construction of four new Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM, or naval action vessels), which will mean a continuation of the Spanish Navy’s fleet modernization process. Two of these new vessels will be build in a patrol version, a third for search and rescue missions, and the fourth ship will be designed for oceanographic research.

Furthermore, this decision affirms the commitment and support of the Spanish Government to its shipbuilding industry and, in this case, specifically to the shipyards in the Bay of Cadiz, where the second series of BAM ships will be built. This will generate a workload of more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs at the Cadiz shipyards by 2015.

In the Bay of Cadiz, Navantia operates a shipyard at San Fernando-Puerto Real, which builds the BAM ships, supply ships and combat patrols. This is also the yard which modernized the 'Santa Maria'-class frigates.

The BAM maritime action ships, whose first series was begun in 2007, incorporate the latest technology in combat systems, communications, and command and control, as well as the latest medical equipment. They thus offer high performance, great versatility in terms of missions, and a high degree of commonality with other Navy ships.

The BAM ships are 93.9 meters long, 14.2 meters wide, have a range 8,000 nautical miles at 15 knots, and a top speed of 20.5 knots. They displace 2,575 tonnes and have a crew of 35 officers and ratings. They can also accommodate an additional 35.

Norway Stops Testing of Israeli Subs
Source: Norway Post

The Norwegian Department of Foreign Affairs (UD) will no longer allow a German shipyard to test submarines built for Israel in Norwegian harbours and coastal waters, NRK reports.

“Norway has the strictest regulations possible on the export of goods and services in the defence field. And this means that we do not export materials or services to countries where there is war, or threat of war,” says Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The German shipyard Thyssenkrupp has since 1997 rented a former naval base near Kristiansand for the purpose of testing new-built submarines.

The testing of subs for the Israeli Nay will now have to be carried out somewhere else.
