As we all know, June 2012 is the 70th anniversary of one of the largest and most significant naval battles in history: the Battle of Midway.

Last year I tried to propose a campaign at Aeroscale covering the battle that would run from June 2011 through the actual anniversary in June 2012. Unfortunately at the time the campaign proposal form wouldn't allow an end date in 2012. Well, now it does, so here I go again!

I'm proposing a campaign/group build for the Battle of Midway that would run for the dates indicated (June '11 - June '12) and would include any aircraft, ship, figure, etc. that participated in the battle on and around Midway island in June 1942 so long as the subject is in the colors and markings it actually used at that time. I've made a post at Aeroscale to see who's interested but it seemed to me that I should put one here too.

So let me know if you're up for it. If I get enough interest, I'll submit a formal proposal. I look forward to hearing from you!

Michael, I just ordered Trumpy's U.S.S. Hornet CV-6, and was planning on doing her in her Midway fit and camouflage. I'm not planning on starting her until after I finish the ship I'm working on, Dragon's U.S.S. Laffey DD459, and then I plan to build up Trumpy's U.S.S. North Carolina BB-55, so the timing would be about right for me. If there is general interest in the campaign count me in.

Sounds like a very good idea. There will be a good deal of 70th anniversaries coming up this next year.

Just a thought, but maybe it could be a Coral Sea/Midway Campaign. Both are battles are important alone, but when put together, they are even more so. Just a thought.

I am sure there will be some interest in this for sure. If you need help let me know!

Operation MI has been approved!

The official Operation page is over on AeroScale http://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Campaigns&file=index&req=showcontent&id=451

As is the official forum page http://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/forums/163606&ord=&page=1 where you can have a look at the banner and ribbon I'm proposing.

We have five enlistees so far and look forward to some of the excellent shipwrights from here!

Jim,

You are, of course, quite right about their importance (importances? ) but for the sake of focus I think I'd like to keep this one on Midway alone. I consider this to be the major pivotal battle.

No sign ups from the Model Shipwright artists yet. How 'bout it guys, we'd love to have you on board! Sign up here: http://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Campaigns&file=index&req=showcontent&id=451

Greetings Michael!

I'm no "artist" by any stretch of the imagination, but I AM a member of ModelShipwrights and I AM enlisting in your build!

I only have one ship that will fit your campaign, and it's the Trumpy 1/350 Hornet. I haven't built a CV since I was 11, so it's been QUITE a bit of time! (YIKES!)

I'll have to start looking into her camo and overall configuration for Midway, as the kit is supposed to represent her during the Doolittle Raid. I don't think any major modifications would have been made between the two events, but I'll check anyhow (since that is most of the fun!).

Thanks for the Campaign! Let's have some fun!!

Hi Michael,

I've visited your Official pages and can't seem to find an Enlist button! There must be some way to join, as you have 14 Recruits signed up!

Any advice?

Thanks,

Daniel,

When you go to the enlist page check in the far upper right hand corner of the page and see if you are logged in, sometime the system doesn't automatically do that if you're visiting a different part of the network (in this case, AeroScale). If it says "login" then click on that and log in with your normal username and password, then it should take you back to the campaign page and the enlist button shoud be live right at the top of the list of enlistees.

Hope that works and welcome aboard! I think you're right about the Hornet, I believe the radar antenna changed but that's acutally pointed out in the instructions.

Michael,

Thank you! I never realized I had to re-Login for different parts of the network. Now I know!

Thanks for the quick response. I'm looking forward to this Campaign! On a second perusal of my stash, I've realized that I have a few Japanese ships that might have participated, directly or indirectly, at Midway. I'll check into this, too, as it looks as if someone else has already claimed Hornet. If I can avoid "doubling up", I will, as this makes for greater variety and interest (and I can use the Hornet build as a guide to learn from!)

Thanks again,

Daniel Chavez

Daniel,

Glad it worked and welcome aboard!

The "official" thread for posting stuff is running on AeroScale since that's where the majority of enlistees are from. The link is:

http://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/forums/163606&ord=&page=1

I know just what you mean about not wanting to double up and you'll be welcome with whatever you want to do, but the main objects of the campaign are to learn about the battle and to HAVE FUN, so you build whatever you feel comfortable with (as long as it was at Midway)!

Again, welcome and I know I speak for everyone when I say we look forward to seeing your model!

Michael
