Group;

Starting a new project and need some advice. My next build will be the 1/240 Revell HMS Campeltown / USS Ward. I'm thinking of makeing her an escort ship but at this time don't fully know.

I have seen some great postings on other groups of her and what some have done as far as detail work. I will use this model to hone my scratchbuilding skills. The scale is a good size to deal with this. I have the GMM PE fret and it looks great.

I'm on a tight budget for this one and have plenty of items in my stash to help out. I will try to scratch new deck guns and if that fails I can always get some cash for the ones provided by B&D Barrels.

The problem I have right now is research info, photos, and basic prints. I could add plenty of great detail but don't have the funds for any books or prints. I'm seeking a basic lay out of the deck and location of hatches, vents and any other items that could stand out. I started on my end but hope another group member could give me some advice.

I have the hull and deck dry fitted and tapped together and removed the molded on stanchons for the railings. I know that the wood planking deck is not part of the Flush Deckers and that will have to be sanded or rebuilt in full.

Any advice would be great.

Sorry to all members. It should be HMS Campbeltown.

Very Respectfully

You need to get, on inter library loan, the Anatomy of the Ship: Campbeltown" by Al Ross. ISBN number is 1-55750-725-2. It'll answer all the questions you have.

Thanks for the info. I went down that road. Could not find that book. I don't want to spend any more cash right now.

Hi Sam!

Do you have a specific variant in mind, yet?

The design was so adaptable that you need to look for a certain ship to depict, so great were the variations. Another advantage to this approach is it will lead to photos from the internet. I have a long term project to produce these variations in diorama form (I already have a couple in the Features section) and though I have amassed several reference works on these ships, it still comes down to picking a specific vessel and seeing what the internet has.

HI Sam, I have he same model and am doing it as the DD 163 Walker. All I did was go to Google images put in "DD 163 Walker" and "USS Walker" and I got 10 pages of pictures of the Walker from 1919 to 1936 when she was broken up for scrap. So try that

Karl & Bruce;

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with an early 1919-20 version. I have the hull together and have a bad seam line I'm working on. I'm a slow builder and this kit has all kinds of hope's for some great scratch building.

Bruce, how did your deck guns come out? Did you go with the after market ones? Let me know.

Thanks

Hi Sam!

I've got a WW I-era scene in mind as well. The best thing you can do is select a ship from that era and see what you can get on the internet. Also, if you let me know which vessel you want to do, I can send you hard copies of relevant pics and drawings from the stuff I have.

As for detailing, the kit guns (including that dinky 3-inch 23) are useless. On my builds, I resort to raiding my stockpile of spare barrels to find ones with the right length and taper. Fortunately, the breech block and mount are simple.

The 3-incher will be a delicate build all around. I have found that inexpensive PE frets from the model railroad hobby to be excellent sources for detail parts.
Pay careful attention to the gun arrangement aft for your specific ship: in the early days, the four incher was on the fantail and the 3 incher on the deckhouse on many ships.

The torpedo tubes will have to scratchbuilt too, and you will have four sets to build! But, I have scale drawings I can send.

Just let me know which ship and I can get some stuff together for you.

Karl:

Thanks for the info. I was just home for lunch and worked on the hull for about an hour. It is looking good. I'm all about the scratch building and will take my time. Building up my photo gallery as we write. I'm seeking some line drawings to find our about some of the box like structures around the deck. They are all part of the deck mold but would like to add some life to them if I only knew what they are.

Any help with that would be great. I will post some photos soon.
I was able to find some line drawings of the deck guns that could be of help. I don't have anything in my stash that comes close to the deck guns. I'm a 1/700 ship guy and all my items are small. I have some styrine tubbing and some other items I will play around with. The practice wont hurt and will come handy in the future.

Hi Sam!

Well, 1:700 battleship barrels could work out for a 1:240 four stacker!

Have you chosen which ship to depict?

I have the same kit as well, however I plan on depicting one of the RCN ships, likely HMCS St. Croix (formerly USS McCook), or HMCS St. Clare (formerly USS Williams).

White Ensign Models had planned on re-releasing their PE set for this kit which would be wonderful to get, but I haven't heard anything about it for awhile. As well need to get the B&D barrels.

Scott;

Great link, thank you. The B&D barrels look good on the web page. I'm going to scratch some and see how they come out. If they don't look good.......I may go down the road with B&D.

Thank you,
Sam
