I will join even though i just finished a commissioned dio with the Scharnhorst and U-47 .Kinda Scappa flowish...
Anyway i have a 1/700 R.Oak at 50% sitting there for the last 3 years so that will be my entry.Doesnt have to be in Scappa flow though or does it?

Alright I've enlisted, but still not sure what I'm going to do. I checked out the HMS Royal Oak and the related materials that you suggested Julian, but I can't find a kit in any scale with the exception of wargaming pieces.
Any thoughts or alternatives?

Good morning Kostas,
Welcome aboard. I think the connection between the Royal Oak and Scapa Flow is very clear in this case so no worry there. The campaign doesn't start until January 1st 2012 so not rush at the moment either.
Regards,
Julian

Good morning Jeremy, the König, Markgraf and Grosse Kurfurst are all available in 1/350th scale. There are also some models of WW I German torpedo boats available, (I'll try and find a link for them). If you decide to go for salvage scene all you would need is a piece of a hull and a civilian tug. I am going to try my first nautical diorama portraying the König sinking. On the other hand it was a British naval base for a long period so you can be sure lots of RN destroyers etc. anchored there at one time or another. The campaign doesn't start until 2012 so maybe Zvezda will have released their Dreadnought by then.
Cheers,
Julian

At the moment the following fellow modellers are enlisted or enlisting for the Scapa Flow campaign:
Jim - GoldenPony
Bruce - GrayGhost666
Karl - Capt Songhouse
Kostas - Angeleyes
Jeremy - Von Hengest
Keith - Beefy 66
Daniel Chavez
Alec - Big Al07
Julian - Gremlin56
Still one campaigner short of the necessary 10 to avoid the campaign grinding to stop. There are still a couple of possibles out there in the forums
The campaign doesn't start until January 2012 so there is still plenty of time to finish up present campaigns and projects.
For those that have already enlisted, thank you very much.

Quoted TextI might be in on this build, if only for the family connection with Scapa Flow. My grandmothers brother was a cadet aboard HMS Royal Oak when it was torpedoed by U-47. Unfortunatley he wasn't one of the lucky few that survived. His photo is on the front cover of Dilip Sarkars book Hearts of Oak. Im not sure if the Royal Oak is available as a kit but there a lot of other possible subjects to look into before the start date.
Hello Stephen,
White Ensign has one in resin looks like the HMS Roval Oak at the right time.
I hope this will help.
Cheers,
Bruce![]()
Thanks Bruce,
I'll have a look at that. I'm surprised Airfix never did it. I would have been right up their alley when they were churning out a lot of RN ship kits in the 60's and 70's. Failing that there is always Revells cutaway U-47. Not up to todays standards maybe but I've always thought it has lots of potential for further detailing.

Hello Jermy,
White ensign has either a 1/350 or 1/700 scale of the Royal Oak. I ahve been looking at her to as a convert for another ship.

Great thanks guys! I'm not sure that I'm ready to commit to a $100 kit just yet, especially if I'm going to be damaging and submerging it. I'll look into those options some more and see what works for me

Hello Jeremy,
You could have her at anchor with 2 white streaks about 3 inches from her side.
That might make a dio look like you know what is going to happen, But it is frozen at the last second.
Just a thought
Cheers,
Bruce

I may indeed try something out like that. Lot's of options. These scales are a lot harder for me too work with than even 1/72 so I'll have to figure out what I can actually do. I have yet to try PE in 1/350 or smaller, and I've never tried rigging in any scale if I need to do that.

All sounds very good, a lot of history attached to Scapa Flow and not just WW1 and 2 - I'll have to have a scout round to see what sort of land bases were up and running at the time, shouldn't imagine anything to fantastic regarding a dockyard of size.
I am somewhat lost where WW1 shipping is concerned due to many being the dreaded resin, I'd love to jump in, and a lot of time to sort through varied bits and pieces at well.
Yup I'm in !

Welcome aboard Jim, thanks for signing up !
Alec, that is a fantastic link to a very inspiring film clip. Especially that part of the hull and screws covered with seaweed being salvaged. That would be a great diorama, just trying to work out how to model that wet looking seaweed
Thanks Bruce, you were right and I was wrong
