Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced today the next Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier will be named the USS John F. Kennedy.

I'm glad to see the John F. Kennedy returning as a modern fleet carrier. The CV-67 was of course an oil burner but from what I read in the ship's library while serving on her from 9/83-6/85 the build up was for a nuclear powered carrier but due to funding that was dropped and it went onto conventional power. Additionally what was to have been the reactor control room had to be converted to Damage Control Central as the re-design was quite extensive. The JFK was never assigned to the West Coast fleet as an assignment to Vietnam would have been quite politicaly incorrect as President Kennedy himself had advocated a drop in U S involvement.
