I take it that this is the campaign thread. I have read the overal view and my take is that any ship that visited the waters of Scapa Flow is a go or am I missing a bigger picture here I thought about building Airfix's HMS Iron Duke.

I stole this information from Wikipedia in my research of what ships were at Scapa Flow. below is what I could gleen from their list of German vessels that intered the base at the end of WW I. From what Wikipedia states there were (74)

GERMAN CAPITAL SHIPS AT SCAPA FLOW GERMAN CAPITAL SHIPS AT SCAPA GERMAN CAPITAL SHIPS AT SCAPA FLOW
GERMAN CAPITAL SHIPS AT SCAPA FLOW

Ok! I need help with the list of RN, USN, or any other nation that had any ships that had moored in the sound.

Hello Bob,
Welcome aboard.
As long as the ship was anchored(or sunk) there you can build it. As far as I can figure out the rules.

I am curious how so many warships got beached in that area in such a short time period. Were they trying to save the ships from sinking?

I still have a lot more to look into. Would be nice to have a good one-stop reference source including information on the ships involved and reference photos.

Hello Jeremy,
In one of Ken's scuttlebutt there was a web site on Scapa and it had some info about a gift shop their that had a history of Scapa. the book might have the info you are looking for.
Also the Royal Museum is on line and it might have a section on all of the ships that were at there, both friendly and captured over the years.
I have gotten a lot of info of ships for the museum over the past few years.
Cheers,
Bruce

Jeremy,
If I understand your question correctly, at the end of the First World War the German High Seas Fleet was to be interred at Scapa Flow. The word "surrender" wasn't used for political purposes but British Admiral David Beatty sure treated them like it was a surrender! Feeling (with some justice) that they had never actually been defeated by the Royal Navy, the Germans chose to scuttle their ships at anchor in the Flow rather than let the British and French have them. Afterwards a number of the smaller ships were beached in an attempt by the British to keep them from blocking the anchorage, but most of the big ones went under and many are still there. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scuttling_of_the_German_fleet_in_Scapa_Flow for a quick run down of it all (this includes links to several other interesting sites on the story). Of course, I stand willing to be corrected on any of this!

Julian,
If I'm reading this group build right, pretty much any Royal Navy ship from the first 1/2 of the 20th century would fit, as well as a number of WWI German ships and some American ships involved in Atlantic and North Sea operations. Is that right? Sounds like it could be very cool, I have a few that could tempt me here!

Bruce: Thanks, I'll look into it and see what I can find

Michael: That is precisely what I was asking for, much thanks for the info and the link! I'm in foreign territory when it comes to Naval history.

Good morning gentlemen,
I have been AWOL on this forum for the last week and for that my sincere apologies
Welcome to Bob and Michael, hope you decide to join the campaign.
The idea was to create a campaign that gave a huge amount of freedom in the choice of model. The connection between all builds is Scapa Flow during the period that it was used as a British naval base, so in the period from 1904 until 1956.
Your build subject must have a connection with Scapa Flow in that time frame, so it anchored there, visited there, left from there, was scuttled or torpedoed there. It could also have been salvaged there.
There are no restrictions on scale.

There are a couple of reference books on the scuttling of the German fleet I can recommend:

The Bull & The Barriers: The Wrecks of Scapa Flow by Lawson Wood
ISBN 0 7524 1753 3

The Grand Scuttle: The sinking of the German Fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919 by Dan van der Vat
ISBN13 : 978 1 84341 038 6

Alec Cap put up a great link to some Youtube footage of salvage work which I found to be very inspiring:

http://youtu.be/MzuxekGZWQM

As mentioned before the campaign doesn't start until January 1st 2012.

I am considering two possibilities for a build and in both cases I will be trying my first diorama. I have the König in my stash which would make a very nice subject but I have also ordered Mirage's V-106 with PE parts. This will need converting to a destroyer that was at Scapa Flow.

On a more administrative note:
At this moment in time only 9 builders have enlisted for the campaign so officially we do not have a "go" form Modelshipwrights. If you feel this is the campaign for you please sign up

Cheers,
Julian

Hello Julian,
Jim and I talk about the number needed for a campaign to be official.
We decided that if 8 members have enlisted then the campaignthen the campaign is Officially good to go.

With the struggle to get members to enlist here at MSW, We think by lowering the number need to start a campaign might get more members to return to MSW and enlist in campaigns.

So you are officially good to go.

I will make an announcement in the campaign forums in a few minutes about the all of this.

cheers,
Bruce

This looks like fun. I am considering Bayern, Royal Oak, or one of the German battlecruisers.

The Scapa Flow Campaign is supposed to take off January 1st 2012.
I will be contacting the original supporters of this campaign in the next few days to see if we are all still go for this little excursion to the Northern North Sea.
The idea is still to have fun: if you feel now that this is not what you are looking for please feel free to say so and decline to participate.
Cheers,
Julian
