Hello All,
I am looking for any books on the great Lake Carriers used by the U.S. Navy to train pilots on how to land on a carrier that was moving.
All help is greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Bruce

If I remember correctly there was an article on a scratch built Wolverine in Fine Scale Modeler magazine a couple of years ago. Might be worth searching there.
cheers,
Julian

Hello All,
Thanks for all the Info.
I am looking for a model to convert to a great lake carrier. I was thinking about the Robert E. Lee Paddle Wheel to use But to much will have to be moved to the side for the paddle wheel and to the other side the funnels plus adding a flight deck and a small bridge area.
I have been researching the carriers for 2 years now, I think I am ready for the build if I can find the right model. If anyone knows of a paddle wheel model that is fairly good, Please let me know,
Thanks,
Cheers,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,
did some tracking in my "archives". In Fine Scale Modeler magazine, April 2006 edition there is an article on a scratch built 1/72 scale model of the USS Wolverine. If you can't get hold of an example PM me
cheers,
Julian

Hello Julian,
I subscribe to Fine Scale, I just do not remember when I started.
I will have to go to my library to take a look at the mag's.If I cannot find it I will PM you in the next day or two. I was thinking about using the Lindberg "Robert E. Lee" as a base and go from there. Does that sound good or a fantasy to you.
I figured to move the paddles to the side and build up the superstruture to a point then flaten it for the runway. Take the funnels and move them to the side and over and down.
Thats as far as I have gotten in the plans.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for the help,
Cheers,
Bruce

That sounds like an ambitious project that could be quite a challenge Bruce. I have a Revell Robert E Lee in my stash. Box scale instead of one of the accepted scales so you will run into problems finding aircraft accessories etc. Maybe a scratchbuild would be easier.
Just my 2 (euro) cents.
Cheers,
Julian

Hey Bruce. A book titled Aircraft Carriers of the world, 1913 to the present, an illustrated encyclopedia, written by Roger Chesneau, released by Naval Institute Press, has a small photo and discription on the Wolverine, pages 220/221, under steam. Back and white.

Hello Bob & Julian,
Thanks for the info.
I have the plans for the Wolverine in 1/350 scale and I am having it converted to
1/271 scale for the model I am going to buy. The planes I am going to use are 1/350 but they will be way back form the carrier so you cannot tell the different sizes. Hopefully.
I have been gathering all the ibfo I can on the Great Lake Carriers for the past 5 years to get ready for the build. I am hoping that I can do it.
Cheers,
Bruce

get this book. It has a lot of pictures of the two carriers. Lake Michigans Aircraft Carriers by Paul Somers I'm sure you can find it on amazon and it's only $20 or so if I remember correctly

Bill Waldorf is the gentleman who build the 1/72nd kit; you can find photos all over the place:
