Hello All,
Here is the thread for the next MSW Great Campaign: Scapa Flow.
I hope all of you that sign up are ready to go, As there is a lot of history about Scapa Flow with all of the ships that were anchored there from Viking Ships to Modern Day Missile Guild Ships.

Cheers,
Bruce

Happy new year Bruce, hope that 2012 turns out to be a great year for all the model building friends all over the world
January 1st 2012 is the kick off date for the Scapa Flow campaign.
The following shipwrights enlisted for this campaign:

Beefy66
CaptainSonghouse
Daniel Chavez
drdoom 1337
Golden Pony
Greyghost666
JimMrr
Skipper
Von Hengest

Enlistment is still possible of course but the clock has started ticking towards September 1st 2012.
The original idea for a Scapa Flow campaign was posted in May 2011 so it is possible that the enthusiasm for joining this campaign has waned. Feel free to sign off, (your build will be missed though).

The campaign site can be found here:
http://modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Campaigns&file=index&req=showcontent&id=497

My plan for the campaign is to build a diorama of the "König" sinking after being scuttled by her crew. A diorama is a new experiment for me so I will first experiment with a 1/400th German torpedo boat:
Made by Mirage of Poland with accompanying PE set.

This is a nice little vessel to convert to waterline style, with enough detail to be interesting as a build. This should get me up to steam on modelling water with resins. It is also cheap enough not to hurt if I plook the build

If this works out I have the "König" with Tom's PE set and brass barrels to build as a waterline diorama of the rather dramatic last moments of her career as a Kriegsmarine warship.

Hope you drop in and tell us your plans for the Scapa Flow campaign

Welcome aboard,
Julian

Hello Julian,
I am still going to do this campaign .
I am looking at 1/700 battleship or Cruiser to go with the V/W class destroyer I already have.
You might want to send PM's to the others that sign up and remind them that the campaign has started. , Just a thought.
Cheers,
Bruce
I am still working to get the gallery set up. It might take a week or so.

It's early days Bruce, lets wait and see who shows up without a PM Can't imagine anyone going AWOL.
I ordered the resin for the diorama yesterday so that should arrive around the weekend. Build of the V-106 is progressing nicely. Plenty of time left for the "König"
diorama
cheers,
Julian

Repeat of a mail I posted in July 2011, gives some ideas of what is allowed and where to find information:

The idea was to create a campaign that gave a huge amount of freedom in the choice of model. The connection between all builds is Scapa Flow during the period that it was used as a British naval base, so in the period from 1904 until 1956.
Your build subject must have a connection with Scapa Flow in that time frame, so it anchored there, visited there, left from there, was scuttled or torpedoed there. It could also have been salvaged there.
There are no restrictions on scale.

There are a couple of reference books on the scuttling of the German fleet I can recommend:

The Bull & The Barriers: The Wrecks of Scapa Flow by Lawson Wood
ISBN 0 7524 1753 3

The Grand Scuttle: The sinking of the German Fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919 by Dan van der Vat
ISBN13 : 978 1 84341 038 6

Alec Cap put up a great link to some Youtube footage of salvage work which I found to be very inspiring:

http://youtu.be/MzuxekGZWQM

As mentioned before the campaign doesn't start until January 1st 2012.

I am considering two possibilities for a build and in both cases I will be trying my first diorama. I have the König in my stash which would make a very nice subject but I have also ordered Mirage's V-106 with PE parts. This will need converting to a destroyer that was at Scapa Flow.

With the small difference that it has now started

Greetings Julian and Bruce!

I don't think the Campaign has been forgotten. It's probably more a case of "Life and the Holidays" kicking in. I know, personally, that Life's Circumstances really created havoc for me over the last few months. I was knocked out of numerous builds that I was genuinely excited about.

I've been flip-flopping on what to build in 1/350. HMS Hood? HMS Prince of Wales? HMS Warspite? SMS Koenig?

Then, Michael Satin (MSW Member) recently sold me a 1/350 ISW HMS Zulu along with some great reference books. (I give Michael the HIGHEST honors for integrity, kindness, and being a true gentleman!) So, if I can clear up some scheduling issues, I should be able to build HMS Zulu for this Campaign, freeing up more time to build the Trumpeter 1/350 Prinz Eugen (also compliments of Mr. Satin!) for my father who is fighting for his life against cancer. (My first model was the Revell 1/720 Prinz Eugen that my dad bought for me a looong time ago, so the Trumpeter model is a special "thank you" project for him.)

I'll try to sort out the ISW parts, get them cleaned up, and post pics soon. Are we supposed to post our box contents with a "proof date" still? Is that a standard policy now, or was that just a requirement for some of the campaigns?

Best Wishes and Happy New Year!

Daniel Chavez

PS

Was Prinz Eugen ever at Scapa Flow after the Surrender?? Hmmm... I'll need to check into that now!

Happy new year to you too Daniel, welcome aboard. Sorry to hear about your father, I know from personal experience that that is heavy burden to carry with you.
The HMS Zulu sounds like a good build for this campaign. I don't think we need to go over the top with photos of the box plus contents pre build: this is supposed to be fun and not a competition

Julian

Hello All,
I finally got the gallery up for the campaign. Big Jim worked on the Photo gallery and fixed it so you should be able to post photo's to it now.
I am sorry about the delay. It is at the end of the section under Campaigns. Look for ! MSW SCAPA FLOW CAMPAIGN.

Quick question, would anyone here know of a good kit for the Royal Oak or for U-47?

Hello All,
@ Julian,
Your "guinea pig" Torpedo Boat is looking good. Thanks for the photo update.

@Jeremy,
I found a Revell kit U-99 1:125 scale is the same type used for the U-47. There is slight difference's between the 2 and you need the numbers and island design for it to become U-47. There is a Royal Oak in 1:700 in resin and I think also in plastic. I am not sure which site I found it. I will see if I can find the site. I think it was either Pacific Front models or Pacific coast models.
I hope this helps.

I have a 1:700 V/W Destroyer I am thinking about doing. The main problem is it is only about 4-5 inches long and my eye's are not that good anymore.
Cheers,
Bruce

Hi Jeremy / Bruce.

WSW did (I don't know if it is still available) produce a Royal Oak in 1/700th, along with HP Models in resin.

The only R class in plastic is the old Frog HMS Royal Sovereign, which is in later war fit, and i beleive the torpedo bulges are wrong for Royal Oak, which would make the conversion tricky to say the least.

The WSW kit really is sweet if you can find one, needs a bit more etch but the casting is very good.

Hello Simon,
You are right about the Frog kit. I have spent hours exploring the HMS Royal Oak kits for a dio I am thinking about doing.
WSW is the best kit so far, IMHO, the best, But I just do not like resin.

@ Jeremy,
I have been looking for the decals to change the U-99 to the U-47. So far I have not found anything for the 1:125 scale. I am thinking about just printing all of them out on transferrer paper and then using them for the Revell kit.
Cheers,
Bruce

Thanks for the replies guys!

I found an AFV Club kit of a U-Boat Type VII B that comes with decals for U-47, but I don't know anything about the accuracy here. I'm guessing that it's a 1/700 kit which is not my favorite scale to work with.

I like your idea Bruce, but that's probably a big model at 1/125 scale. How long would that hull come out to be when finished?

Hello Jeremy,
It will be about 21-22 inches after the build. About 6-8 inches tall.
There is a 1/350 kit that might do what you want. Check Pacific Front for it.
I hope this will help,
Cheers,
Bruce

Ok yes, that is the same one I was looking at Bruce. I don't know anything about Pacific Front, what is their service like?
