I have spent quite a bit of time trying to determine if the portholes on this ship were framed glass or solid metal? no sense in drilling out all 338 port holes if they were not glass

On all the pictures I have seen of the Spee, the portholes looks very dark, which is the effekt you want to redo - weather they are glassed or solid. I drilled mine out and I find the result represents the real look quite good.

So get at it - its not that hard, a good cup of coffee and some good music

Hi There. I drilled out 960 port holes in my 1/350 Akagi. Use the silver bits like the type from Micro-Mark. The black ones are crap. By the time you are done you will really know how to use that drill.

I started to drill out the portholes today with a variable speed Dremel tool.Looks perfect so far, the bit fits perfectly into the porthole molding.I have applied a layer of packing tape to the inside hull porthole openings and colored the tape with a very faint hint of Tamiya clear blue to simualte glass.I intend on running a fiber optic light to inside the hull to illuminate the portholes

I am a little doubtfull about the longterm effect on the tape with a lightscource in the hull.

Remember the portholes in the buildings

http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/Led.htm looking at something like this that can be powered with a six volt battery external to the model.Your right, the tape is not durable enough
