Forget about Heller - their molds are ancient, parts are full of mold pin marks, and detail is awful. Not to mention that because of the odd scale (1/400)AM parts are limited. Trumpeter and Academy is a sort of toss-up, but personally, I chose Trumpeter. Either of these two will definitly need AM weapons, gun barrels, PE doors and railings, etc., etc., etc., if you want to go that route. If you decide to get a laser cut wood deck, make sure it is designed for the model of your choice as the models are not identical, and the deck for one will not fit the other. (I have a deck for Academy Graf Spee that did not fit my Trumpeter and can't get rid of it!). If you're more interested in 1/700, Trumpeter makes two versions of Graf Spee; 1937 and 1939, and Testors/Italeri made one in 1/720.

I have buildt the trumpeter 1:350 version and was quite happy with it, but it needs additional PE in my opinion.

Paul,
If you are interested in a smaller scale Graf Spee, the 1/720 Italeri offering, even though it dates back to the 1970s, is quite nice. I'd avoid the 1/600 Aurora and 1/700 Fujimi kits though.
