Hello,

I am a model car builder but dabble in military as well. As a child, I fondly remember building a model submarine. I have no clue on the make, model, scale, etc. What I do remember is one side of the sub came off, so you could see the inside. Are there model subs out there now where I can detail the inside, like the engine, bunks, etc? If memory serves, the sub was maybe 12 inches long.

Regards

I forgot to add...Looking for one that can be highly detailed, with photo etch and whatnot.

Hello Doug, The subs you remember were Polaris Missile boats of the George Washington class. Two companies made models of them, Renwal & Revell. The Revell kit is still available from time to time. I don't think any PE sets, or any other upgrades, was ever made for them. Al

Ahoy Doug,
There were and are still found, the Polaris subs of the 60's
and the U-47 Type VII and a Type XX1 German u boats, which
displayed interiors. These subs are not very accurate as far
as interiors go and there are no after market details or PE available.
They do however built as fine basic kits, accuracy aside and
measure in between 21 to 26 inches in length.

You may want to consider the Revell 1:72 u boats Type VIIC and C/41.
These built into very accurate renditions of the subs, have a
multitude of PE and resin details available as aftermarket
parts and CMK make resin modules the represent the interiors
quite accurately but you must cut open the hull yourself to
display the interiors.
These, once built, are quite impressive at 33inches in length.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks guys! Another question: do any other sub kits have the interior open?

As mentioned Revell does a type XXI in 1:144 with interior and opened for display.

Quite old though - and it shows, but with a little TLC...

The only sub kit readily available that I know of offhand that displays the interior out of the box is the 1/72 U-Boat kit from Andrea, which is incredibly expensive. You can buy a portion of the sub to display as a cutaway, but it's still expensive.
