Nice to have you along for the roller-coaster ride Kev.
I got back from Mt Panorama today and one of the packages waiting from me may just contain the last DJ Parkins set I need to start the 1/72 Corvette I have in the stash, but never fear as the DKM Admiral Grag Spee will be being finished before I start the Corvette as I think it is going to be a rather long project.
Cheers mate

Some more progress..

All the fore deck items that needed to be installed before painting were and I shot the model with Gunze H308.

Next up it will be the wooden deck, or maybe I will install the superstructure first so I can spray it before installing the deck.. who knows!
Tomorrow I am off to Sydney for a few days driving my son's car back to Sydney (with him in it, woohoo!)
Back to just me and my Wife and the pets..
Until I return,
Cheers

Update time..
Wooden decks are on..

The rest of my time has been divided between Aeroscale campaign builds and building and painting the 14 20mm cannon on the GS.
More pictures later

Got a bit done today but lost an hour or two with an interview and some shopping..

Anchor chains and capstans in place. Is it kust me or does that gun look a bit over-scale?
Cheers

@ Daniel - thank you very much for your kind comment!!

Warren - great work, wooden deck, capstans and anchor chains are looking really good! However, with the 20 mm I agree with you, I thought the kit's guns a little out of scale, too. I used the Master's Oerlikons without their shields and took German 20 mm barrels instead of the Oerlikon barrels. More a fantasy-weapon in the end but looking close for the scale

Hello again Jan.

I will have to have a look at all the other German 20mm single mounts I have and work it all out. I don't want to spend any more money on this one but we will see how the ones in the Dragon Z series destroyers look.. or the Scharnhorst may shed some light as well.

That build of yours looks much better than mine ever will!!

Regards

Looking good Warren,

The wood deck looks the part. I agree the 20mm are not the best, I used the WEM etched 20mm on mine, Jan's solution sounds good too, I do think the dragon barrels are a little chunky to get the hollow ends, but the rest of the mount looks good though.

Thanks Si.
From what I can gather the 20mm single mounts were about 1.5m high in 1/1 scale, that would make them about 4.2mm high in 1/350 scale and that is exactly the height the Trumpeter ones are in the kit. The barrels are a bit thick but they will get lost in the back ground when all the other clutter is installed.
So in this case Trumpeter bashing is unwarranted. Woohoo!!
Cheers all

Fair shout Warren, I reckon the kit mounts will do fine, I just happened to have the WEM ones to hand, if not I would have gone the same way as you.

Hi Everyone.

Got a fair bit done today after my doctor's appointment. Went to the paint both and shot lots of Gunze H308 around the place..

I also painted all the turrets, searchlights etc etc. That's
it for now.
Until tomorrow
Cheers

Thanks for that Simon.

Has anyone out there got a clear picture of the Graf Spee's flying bridge? The one open to the elements? As usual Trumpeter have missed any colour call outs and I only have a dodgy B&W photo for a reference. Has anyone got a picture that clearly shows the bridge, colour would be nice.

Thanks in advance

Great looking deck.
I've built this kit myself and must agree it's a good starting point (actually my 2nd 350 kit. The first was Tamiya's KGV built before I had knowledge that people made after market upgrades!) for PE adventures.
However, I just used the bits in the box and wondered why they supply a one piece waterline plate with a three piece deck (quarterdeck and two part main deck). Although I must admit the join is not too noticeable when completed.
My next 350 is the Trumpy Adm. Hipper (one piece deck)with some aftermarket PE weapons and railings!
Keep Building
Tom

Almost there!

Got a few railings, the boot top, attach the deck to the hull and a few other small bits like completing the Arado in Picture 1 and she is finished.

Cheers all

Warren,
I'm a bit confused (normal for me ) As I go back thru all the posts here, you seem to building this ship as a waterline model, yet suddenly she is full hull!
So, when did you attach the lower piece, and why not make that your first step since usually getting the upper and lower hull to mate up gracefully is such a PITA?

Thanks Russell and Anthony..
Bruce, attaching the lower hull late in the build is Trumpeter's usual method of construction. Now I normally attach it at the start but then have nothing but hassles trying to stop it getting scratched etc so I thought I would try Trumpeter's way for once. I test fitted the two pieces before I did anything else and the fit was excellent so I went ahead and did nearly everything else to the upper hull and glued the two pieces together. Only neede aclamp fore and aft and it appears to have worked very nicely.
Photos soon.

I am calling this one done. I am starting to get the first signs of building too many ships so the Ar-196 and some rigging can wait a while. I will build some planes and a car to see if I can get over the hump.

The last one shows the Graf Spee next to the HMS Hood. Some sources call it a pocket battleship but to my eyes it is really no more than a heavy cruiser, although the main armament was a bit bigger than most other cruisers carried.
AN enjoyable build and a simple PE set.
Recommended for those who want to try their hand at PE sets, although I found the railings on this one were a bit tricky..
Cheers

Warren another great example of how it should be done to us mear mortals I did notice that some of the railings have bits on top of the stantions are they supposed to be like this while others do not.

Thanks for that Keith.

All I can assume is that the railings have built in awning supports. All the railings around the edge of the ship have these extended stanchions and I am assuming that is what they are for.

Kindest Regards
