Just in time for the new year, I have completed a new kit, the Hobby Boss 1/350 Astute Class submarine! I was drawn to the fact that the Astute doesn’t look like all the other black tubes out there; it actually has some neat contours and a lot of character, especially with that weird “hunchback” design.

I must say that, photoetch aside, I had a good time building this kit, and despite a few flaws, it was a lot of fun and a pretty simple build, especially compared to some of the old dog planes I build much of the time. Since I’m pretty new to building ships and subs, I’d appreciate any feedback you can give me!

Thanks, and Happy New Year, all!

Hello Adam,

Very nice job on the HMS ASTUTE. Yes it is a very nice kit to build. Simple kit but great looking.

Happy New Year and lots of modeling in 2015!

Cheers,
Joe

Liked your build article and the results for your Astute, Adam.

I agree, it's one of the most interesting looking of contemporary sub designs.

Thanks, guys!

I was surprised that such a new kit needed as much work as it did as far as cleanup goes, but thankfully, my years of building Hellers, Matchboxes and FROGS have me well-versed in such things!

Does anyone know how this kit stacks up against Airfix's Trafalgar class?

Well here's an Airfix build review:

Hi Adam,

Both kits are excellent in my opinion.

I built the HMS Trafalgar as a companion to the Astute and it
was a simply and enjoyable build.

The details is crisp and the usual sanding of the hull halves,
to get that nice seamless result.

Now just waiting for the Vanguard to arrive so that I may
complete my trio of modern British subs.

Cheers,
Joe

That Trafalgar looks nice, man! it's an amazingly conventional looking submarine in comparison to the Astute, despite the weird "sonar grille" at the front.

Is that the Hobby Boss Vanguard you're waiting for? My buddy is building one right now! It's also cool looking, but shelf space for "boomers" is a bit tight, that's why I tend to go for smaller boats!

Hi Adam,

Quoted Text

weird "sonar grille" at the front

At first, I had a little trouble getting used to it, kind of looked like a sub with teeth... ....but as time pasted, I got used to it....may tone it down a little, eventually.

And yes, the HobbyBoss Vanguard....looks like it's going to be another great little build, in between major projects.

Cheers,
Joe

It does look like teeth! That's hilarious!

Someone should paint one as a humpback whale or something. Maybe do it in white, like Moby Dick!
