Too bad about the hull plating features, though. I wonder if a good sanding can correct that?

The Revel 1/72 Flower Corvette has a similar issue. It's hull plates are over stated and I've seen several build that sanded them down just enough so they convey the existing of hull plates.
From these images (thanks for the link, Devin) it looks like that's fully plausible here as well.

I picked up 3 varying grades of sanding sponges from the hardware store and will tackle the hull with them to see what I see. I hope to be able to start on it by the end of the month, maybe even tackle the sanding sooner than that as that's the big question on everyone's mind.

Thanks for posting, now the problem, do I get the Yorktown or wait for the Enterprise? Both is not an option.
