Hey all. Being new to the ship modelling game and all I'm wondering if this looks good enough to be construed as water. It's the vacuform base that comes with the Trumpeter 700th carriers painted with Cobalt Blue hue. I've never painted water before and I'm not sure how it came out. Just a note, I haven't painted on the whitecaps yet. I'll get to that as soon as I find out whether or not I should repaint it with a hint of gray or keep it.

Thanks for the help.

Also, if I should repaint it, should I stick to Cobalt Blue mixed with some concrete gray color? Or should I mix it with a different color? Or should I just get aa completely different color blue all together? If the latter, what color blue would you recommend? I've looked at metallic Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine Blue even but I didn't buy them.

Hello Michael,

That color is definitely too bright and vivid.

What brand of paint do you use? so that I may suggest a color
or color combo that best represents water.

Cheers,
Joe

Well the paint I used for this is Winsor & Newton. Frankly I'll use any acrylic paint as long as it's not too expensive and is a good color. I'll also mix colors as well to get a good result. I just don't know what to mix. But I would like to use the artist type acrylics like what I have used for this base.

Mike,
To my eye the color looks a little too light. You my want to consider where you dio is taking place. I'm not a navy guy but I've seen many color photos taken in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Med, deep water and shallow water, with each having different hues of dark blues and greens. The deeper waters tend to be more blue in most of my photos with a more greenish tint in shallower water. This is kind of like color modulation on a solid color armored vehicle. You may wind up with going with several diffenrent hues to give the base a feeling of depth. Get on the web and look for color pictures of ships and you'll see what I mean. If you want a color to start with I would recommend a deck blue. The navies chose this color to make it harder for aircraft to spot the ship as the ships blended into the ocean color.

Hi Michael,

If I may suggest, aim for something like this, for general open water:

This base is painted with Tamiya Sea Blue,Medium Blue and a touch of Deep Green
and white & black to adjust lightness or darkening.

I personally use these colors with an airbrush but any colors
along these tones can be used with airbrush and hand brush.

What is important is that the tones are constantly varied...
lighted and darked with some white and black, as you apply.

Finish off with some drybrushing of white for the caps...coat with
some gloss gel medium...this will create the illusion of depth.

This works fine for me....others may have different suggestions.

Hope this helps.

I thought I mentioned it here but apparently I didn't. I'm aiming for a mid-pacifc deep water on a warm clear day.
