What color should I use to paint the hull of a USS Fletcher, red or hull red?

Also who makes good acrylic paints?

I have seen some people use red with a little black added to give it a deeper color.

Model Master has a range of paint for warships now. The US section has all the colors for all the different camouflage measures, as well as deck stains and hull greys. Hull anti fouling red and boot top gray-black are in there too I think.

I too usually just use Testor's Insignia Red. A true antifouling red actually has a brown tone to it, so adding a few drops of black to a red base would indeed probably get you close enough.

I'm not a big acrylic fan only because you really have to airbrush them to get the best coat and they don't adhere to the plastic as well as enamels, so you usually have to prime first, which can obscure some detail on smaller models. If you wash the models first with water and a small amount of dishwashing soap, you'll remove skin oils and the mold release agent which gives the paint a little more bite in the case of acrylics.

But hey, whatever floats yer boat!
