Hi, all. This is my 1st post on model shipwrights, because I am building my 1st submarine. I am wanting to know the correct color for a German type XXIII coastal u boat. Trumpeter's painting instructions say medium gray. Tamiya medium gray and Model Master Medium gray are very different. So, which is correct? or is there another more correct color?. I have seen green armored vehicles that Trumpeter says to paint Tamiya XF-20(medium gray), so I am not all that confident in Trumpeters instructions. Thanks, Mike

Mike,
I will suggest the following Tamiya acrylic colors as that is
what I use on my u boats.

Upper hull & tower: XF 20 Medium Gray
Lower hull: XF24 Dark Gray

You may want to add a few drops of white in the colors for
scale effect.

You will also get some variation to the colors depending on how much weathering you plan to do.

Do a Google search for images of the type XXIII to see where the demarcation should be placed.

Cheers,
Joe

Should you not have Tamiya paint, the company Lifecolor from
Italy make a dedicated Kriegsmarine paint set for u boats.

You want set no:2 and would use Shlickgrau 58 for upper hull
and tower and Dunkelgrau 52 for the lower hull.

Now are these paints more accurate? I couldn't tell you.

Tamiya works fine for me.

Cheers,
Joe

PS post some pics once the sub is done and enjoy the build.

I've used
Tamiya XF-54 - upper hull + tower
XF-24 - lower hull
