Here you go mates, the answers.

1.This British Battleship ran aground between the wars on an ironically named shoal. Name the ship, the shoal, and why it was ironically named.
The ship was the Nelson. The Shoal was the Hamilton Shoal. M60a3 got this one.

2This US ship was given the nickname RAMP after WWII. What was the ship and why was she called RAMP?
The ship was the USS Stewart. She was captured and used by the Japanese. She got the nickname RAMP, Recovered Allied Military Personal, when she was recovered after the war. Foxroe scored on this one.

3.The Italian battleship Giulio Cesare earned its place in history, along with the HMS Warspite. What is the Cesare’s historic claim to fame? The Warspite scored the longest hit ever against another ship when she nailed the Cesare. . Brandydoguk nailed this one.

4.This Japanese I boat went down in history by performing a feat that, so far, is unique in military history. Name the boat and the feat. I-25 is the boat I was thinking of. She bombed the Pacific Northwest, the only time the US has ever been bombed. My info, The Fleets of WWII, says it was I-25. Foxroe said I-26. I don’t know if his was a typo of maybe FOWII was wrong. M60a3 also has info that it was I-15 that shelled the US. He could be right so I’ll give it to both of them.

5.These two US destroyers were basically destroyed. Their engines and machinery was used to make two new destroyers, which were given the same names and hull numbers, something unique in USN history. What are these two ships? The Cassin and Downes were in dry dock along with the Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor. Blaster76 correctly name them.

6.Several warships served under the flags of Italy, Germany, and Japan, at one time or another. Name any of them. M60a3 gave one of them, Audace, ex Kawakaze, ex TA20.

7.Prior to the US entry in WWII this US Coast Guard ship wandered into dangerous waters. Name the ship and why the waters were so dangerous. USCG Modoc was the ship that wandered too close to the Bismarck chase. Foxroe had the answer this time.

8.In 1941, prior to the US entry in WWII, the US Navy captured a German merchantman off the coast of South America. Since technically the US wasn’t at war they had to come up with a plausible excuse for this action. What excuse, harkening back to the 19th century, did they come up with? It was indeed “Suspected Slaver” that was used as a reason to nab a German raider. Foxroe gets this one also.

9.Most everybody has heard of the Graph Zeppelin. When it appeared she wasn’t going to be built what other sister ships were considered for conversion to carriers? Here is the first unanswered question. The ships, believe it of not were the Lutzow and Scheer. I can’t quite see 10000 ton 27 knot carriers.

10.In the wake of Pearl Harbor the US navy was so short of battleships it turned to this South American country in the hopes of buying their battleship. What country and what ship?
The ship was indeed the Almirante Lattore of Chile. M60a3 had this one right.

11.Several nations made “cruiser subs” but only this sub had heavy cruiser guns. What sub? The French Surcouf was the sub with the big guns. Brandydoguk was the big gun on this one.

The British were masters at coming up with nicknames for various ships. What were the following ships and explain the nicknames.

12.What were the “Cherry tree ships?” The ships were the Nelson and the Rodney, ships that were cut down by the Washington treaty. It was Foxroe on this one. Another name for the two were Nelsonol and Rodenol, because they looked like tankers.

13.What were the “Salmon and Glickstein?” I’m surprised that nobody got one. These were the names given the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau by the RAF and RN. Only reason I can think of is that no Brit could pronounce these two tongue twisters.

14.What were “Refit and Repair?” The Refit and Repair were the Renown and Repulse and mlb63 knew it.

15.What were the “Outrageous, the Curious, and the Spurious?” These three “large light cruisers” were the Glorious, Courageous, and the Furious. Brandydoguk knew these three.

16.What were the “Woolworth _______” with _______ being the type of ship? These were the Woolworth Carriers, the escort carriers. Brandydoguk carried the day on this one also.

Bonus Question. (This one isn’t mine but a friend came up with it and it’s one of the best trivia questions I’ve ever heard.)
This ship was for many years the most powerful warship in its country’s navy. December 7th found her nearly caught at Pearl Harbor with the other ships. She ended the war being prepared to escort the British pacific fleet carriers. What is the ship? The ship that answers this question, that nobody got, is the HMCS Prince Robert, an armed merchant cruiser. She escorted a convoy to Hong Kong and was on her way back on Dec 7th She helped escort American convoys to the Aleutians. Later she was heavily modified into an auxiliary anti aircraft cruiser. It was in this guise that she was being readied to be transferred to Royal Navy command to escort British carriers when the war ended.

I want to thank everybody for participating in this quiz. I hope everybody had fun and I plan to try again next year to stump you all.

Yes, Halfyank, great fun. I have to give credit...where you show me with the right answers, it was really my dad. He answered them without referring to any books. That's why I didn't get away with much as a kid...

OMG! HMCS Prince Robert! I've been beating my head against the wall on that one. I had ASSumed it was a British or American ship, not Canadian! Good one!

Looking forward to the next one!

Don't feel bad. My friend posted this one three times, over three years, and nobody got it. He finally told me privately when he found out I like AMCs. I alwasy assumed it had to be Dutch, or maybe some other small European country. I KNEW it couldn't be any American or British ship, forgetting of course that Canada was British. I still think this is the best trivia question I've seen.
