I'm building Mirage 1/350 Torpedoboot #86. My question is did the Germans paint out pennant numbers as in WWII, or should it be numbered as per instructions? Were they ever camo painted, or just overall dark gray?

Biggles,
I believe the German torpedo boats were black, not dark gray. They are pictured with pennant numbers showing, and painted over, even during wartime.

Thanks. I just read in another source that German torpedo boats were black from 1898 until 1916, but in practice, those dates may have some overlap. So...painting could be black or dark gray, with or without pennant numbers!

Hi Biggles,
Because of scale, painting her black would just swallow up the details. I imagine you'd want darker than RN grey but lighter than black.

Could you post some pictures when tou get her done?

If you can get access to some Floquil Railroad enamels, get their "weathered black". Should be just what you need. If you can get it, pick up a couple of bottles since they are now out of production.

Or...Tamiya dark gray, darkened with some black, to taste, then weathered, will work.
