Hello everyone and welcome aboard for my next maritime build, Fujimi's 1/350 IJN Fuso.

First up is the box..



Then the construction booklet.. all in Japanese unfortunately..



Then the brass barrels for the main and secondary armament..



Then we have the four sheets of PE that came with the Fujimi PE set..



It also has a few brass barrels for smaller guns. Then we have the wooden deck..





I have never used a Hunter wooden deck before or Fujimi PE. The wooden deck has some wrinkles in it but hopefully it will flatten out when applied. It is very thin so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I will be away from the bench fr a while with a trip to Sydney, NSW and the Clipsal 500 coming up next week but I am looking forward to getting a few hours in before I leave on our cruise in March..

Warren,

Really looking forward to seeing you build the Fuso. I started the same kit about a year ago during my transition to the Pacific. However it was put to the side cause of other immediate priority builds.

The PE is ok, however I think it is missing some parts that should have been addressed.

Anyway, looking forward to watching this build.

I too am looking forward to your build. I've always had a fondness for Fuso, the "ugliest ship in the Imperial Navy"!

Welcome aboard Tim and Simon.

First up, the vents provided by Fujimi are not good. They have sprue attachments either side of the vent and are so small they are difficult to hold even with tweeaers. This makes clean up very difficult, in fact almost impossible no matter how cleanly you remove them from the sprue. Should have been moulded with attachment points on the top and bottom of the vent. Anyone know of a company who makes better vents?



There are 51 of these and I am not sure how many I lost while trying to clean them up. On a happier note the PE supplied with the wooden deck is nice, both naked ..

The deck has been painted..



And the wooden deck applied..



Wooden deck not too bad a fit but as you will see in the next photo not perfect. Gun shields had to be removed before applying the deck but it didn't tell you that anywhere I could find. Also, the adhesive layer started coming away from the deck in a few places while removing the large fore-deck piece..



Notice how the holes in the deck for the vents are mis-alligned?

Oh and the hull has been painted as well..





And that's about it for now.

Nice work on the decking. I wasn't tracking the need to remove the gun shields, interesting to know.

With regards to the vents, Hasegawa has an upgrade kit with numerous vents, not sure if the ones you need are provided in the quantity though. There are some 3D printed ones available through Shapeways and last but not least Flyhawk has brass turned vents.

just a few options for you.

Looking great so far, keep it up.

Yes it can be fun at times..

Lots of work for not much apparent progress boys and girls. Lots of vents and other deck fittings so no real glamour photos to post. Am going away next week for 10 day for a leisurely cruise around the South Pacific.

The ship didn't fall off the end of the Earth, but I did get a virus while I was on one of the tours we did. Thanks to the idiot behind me coughing all the way back from the village!

I have been doing stuff as well as the following pictures may show.. The deck has been growing air vents, gun mounts and boats..





A 25mm gun mount..







Next up are the gun turrets.. all six of them..

Thanks Warren. I was looking at one of those wood decks for my 1/700 Naiad build. After seeing your results I think I'll hold off and see how I do with oils to replicate the decking. That being said--your ship looks AMAZING.

The deck for something that small wouldn't look very realistic I don't think. This is not the best wooden deck I have used. Very few of the holes in the deck lined up with holes in the plastic.

Looks like someone has hacked my Photobucket account and has filled it up with photos not of my making. Will have to fix it somehow. But anyway I will just have to go back to uploading here by the look of it... for the moment anyway. Update soon.

It has been a long time since you were last here! Great to see you back & with progress on the Fuso!

You have been out of the loop haven't you? Photo bucket have changed their rules & no longer allow 3rd party hosting of images unless of course you pay an exorbitant fee!!!

It's caused mayhem for anyone with all their images on Photobucket!!!
