After about 3 weeks of work, my 1/350 Titanic Triple-Expansion reciprocating steam engine is finished.

I have no idea how many hours I have in this little creation and I don’t want to think about it. Probably too many.

The whole model is entirely scratch built from styrene, aluminum (both tube and milled), brass (stock, tube, photo etched, wire), and stainless steel.

Some pretty staggering statistics:

Weight: 1,000 tons
Height: 30 feet
H.P. Cylinder Diameter: 54 inches
I.P. Cylinder Diameter : 84 inches
L.P. Cylinders Diameter: 97 inches
Stroke: 75 inches
Operating Speed: 76 r.p.m.
Operating Output: 16,000 h.p.

The term "Massive" seems inadequate to describe the size of these engines Joe. Staggering might be more appropriate.

To think that a man could fit inside of the cylinders is just amazing and the rpm achieved is a feat of engineering!

You've done an amazing job of scratch building on a fascinating topic! Most original!

Thanks for sharing!

If I might ask; was this a quadruple expansion marine engine (never heard of such.) Or a triple expansion with some sort of additional pump cylinder (bilge??) included???

OK, You made me do my web research: Never encountered a triple expansion engine with DUAL low pressure cylinders before. Admittedly a single low pressure cylinder would have had to be huge in diameter. Twin LP's allow for a narrower but longer engine construction - better for ship design.

Awesome work, Joe! Now you have two more to make, and 29 boilers as well for your Titanic model.

That is an amazing piece of workmanship, it's almost a shame to put paint on it!

Thanks everyone !

I forgot to mention that the crank is turned aluminum, the rods and eccentrics are all there too. The crank is set to TDC so I could line up all the valves in this crazy small scale. It’s all there, even the crank bearing lubrication fittings. Nearly impossible to see, but they’re there.

Indeed. The triple Expansion engines used on Titanic, Olympic, and Britannic were the largest of their type ever built. WSL and H&W used them for pure economy, ease of use, and maintenance. Titanic wasn’t exactly slow either. H&W never maxed the engines on her abreviated trial. Once design speed was reached they didn’t go beyond but it’s pretty safe to say that she was only a knot or two slower than Mauritania at nearly 50% fuels savings. And we have to remember Titanic was substantially larger than Mauritania too. These fuel numbers aren’t ratios and that’s damn impressive

Joe,

That is some truly stunning artistry! "Titanic" is soooo overdone as a subject, but your beautiful and original treatment is truly fresh and interesting. Well done my friend!

Well thanks!

I completely agree it’s overdone. Those goofy conspiracy theories lately make for entertaining, albeit wreckless, journalism. The switch theory and coal bunker theory to name the big ones.

The engines on the other great liners were pretty boring though. Turbines just don’t look impressive! If I did another reciprocating engine, I’d probably build one of the German liner plants like Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse.

Thanks! I have tons of model ships I’ve completed over the years.

Here are some of my other builds. The extremely small ships are mostly scratch built in 1/1800.

I think a good question comes up... Does the engine work?
