This is the 1/35th scale kit from Micro-Mir









Kit needs some TLC, not recommended for beginners. Prop blades and hatch hinges are PE, and as such are too thin in my opinion. I glued them onto thin plastic sheet and used the PE as a template to shape the plastic. Then I used the combination PE/plastic parts. I replaced some PE parts, 'lift rings' or 'tiedowns', not sure which, with thin brass wire. I used Testor's Clear parts and Window Making Liquid instead of using the provided clear parts for the deadlights and portholes. Totally rebuilt the torpedo carrying spar. Thanks for looking. I think it is interesting that a question on the name of the original vessel was the final stumper recently on the TV game show "Jeopardy".

Not one of the contestants got it! One person had nothing. Of the remaining two; one said the Monitor and the other said the Merrimack.

Sad but interesting.

Here's another pic, before paint, showing some of the mods that I made.



The 'fins' in front of the conning towers were supplied as PE, and too thin in my opinion. I replaced them with plastic for better scale thickness as well as ease of assembly. The deadlights on top of the hull were damaged while dealing with the seam there, and one was never molded. So I replaced them with thin slices of plastic tubing. Al

It's all a matter of interests. Never been much of a sports guy, but I have cousins who are. They can give you all kinds of stats on players and teams going way back, but think it's strange that I can name ships, dates, battles, etc.. Al

Your Hunley is one sweet build! Your paint job really nailed that drab 19th Century boilermaker look of this little monster. I agree with your decision to replace some of the photoetch parts with thicker plastic pieces too; etch is usually better than the parts it replaces, but sometimes the sheet metal parts are just too thin!
