I'm scratchbuilding a model of the German commerce raider "Pinguin" in 1/350...the photos I've seen of her and other ships of her kind show the lateral strips of plating running along the sides of the hull quite prominently. Would using very thin (like .005") strips of styrene along the hull realistically replicate this feature?

Hi Doug,

Yes, thin plastic strips could do the job, but it is a lot of work and the effect would be heavy, even using super thin .005" strips. A method I've had good results using in 1/350 and smaller scales is to use strips of masking tape; just prime the hull, then apply the strips and spray a couple more of coats over them. Removing the tape leaves subtle but sharp bands of thicker paint that suggest hull plating.

Do you leave a hair-line gap between tape strips so the raised line forms?

I seen a you-tube video by a guy name Harry Houdini that used finger nail tape. The results were quite impressive. Check out his video.

It looks like that in the picture, but no. There is a bit of paint buildup at the tape edges, so when the tape is removed small ridges are left at the edges of the bands that look like weld lines. A happy accidental byproduct of the process!

The trick is to tape over only half of the plated areas; the exposed parts will be the plates that stand proud after the second and third coats of primer. In the example above, only three bands of tape were applied over the initial primer coat.

Here's how this banding effect looks under the final camouflage paint in 1/700:

I use Tim's method with a slight variation. Instead of spraying paint I use very fine lines of white and black oil paints along the tape. Cut the tape to the width of the panels you want to create. White for the top of the plating and black below. The good thing with oils they are easy to manage. They will just wipe off if you think it's not right or over done. To the eye it creates that perception that there is a change in level on the hull. It's quite subtle.

Michael,

Do you thin the oil paint and allow capillary action to move it along the tape line or do you straight paint the difference colors?

Also how do you address the vertical plate lines since the hull plated are not a solid plank the full length of the ship?
