I guess it is the modeling gods’ way of telling me that it’s time to get back to work!

Yes, yes it is, Tim

Ok, back on the job with the Constellation’s paint!

In what was apparently an attempt to simulate the look of oxidized copper cladding the ship carried when in service, Constellation museum staff have applied an absolutely GODAWFUL bluish-green color the to the wood below the old waterline.

The copper that once graced the real hull is long gone, although the Pyro model shows it in place. If I stick to my plan to depict the ship as she appears today as a museum, the “copper” detail will have to be painted green. I've mixed up a sample and placed it next to the model in an attempt to get into the idea, but it is so UGLY...

That blueish green is not a pleasant colour Tim,

Your build, but I would be sorely tempted to keep the coper colour, maybe lightly weathered.

Good to see you back on this one.

Cheers

If the logic for using the green were followed to it's logical conclusion, would that not entail scraping off all the molded detail of the copper plating? I wouldn't be up for that, but you've worked magic with the pyro kits I would never have dared attempt.

Man, that is one ugly green. Did the navy do it to save money?

I agree with Si

muted/dulled down copper would look much better

I agree, guys... that hull green is just too ugly - and historically questionable, at best!

The model will be a gift to my father as a memento of our visit to the U.S.S. Constellation museum, but I’m willing to bet he may not even remember that hull color anyway. Plus, he has a print of Constellation hanging in his workshop which shows the original copper hull:

Good enough for me! I went ahead and shot the copper plating detail on the hull bottom with Tamiya acrylic Dark Copper (XF-28).

It came out a little bright, but a dark oil wash should dull it down nicely.

Nice, Tim.

The wash will bring out the detail on the sheathing too.

Cheers

WOW! Late to the party, but this is a very inspiring build! I may yet tackle a sailing ship.

Tim, I'm not sure when they painted that awful green color on the hull-- I visited the Constellation in Baltimore Harbor with my Wife, Sister-in-law and our kids way back in 1991, and I don't remember anything but a black painted hull near the waterline. It was an interesting trip-- turned out we were the only visitors on the ship at the time, and the docent there gave us a great tour-- the ship was undergoing renovation, and the lower decks were almost completely empty. The only deck space that had anything in it was the aft cabin, which had been turned into a work/restoration area. I noticed a US Army "steel pot" helmet on one of the lockers, and since I was an active duty Major at the time, asked the docent about it. He told me it was his- he was a Reserve Lieutenant Colonel- and he wore it when working on the lower decks, since the overhead was so low he was tired of hitting his head all the time!! It's a great ship, and you are building a great model. Can't wait to see it finished.

Tim,
I agree with the others that the copper look is the right way to go. Love watching you work your magic on these old kits.

Tim,

I just agree with what everybody else said - the copper looks just right, and some wash will bring out the details perfectly!

Cheers,

Thanks guys. Seeing it on the model, I think that the copper hull will work just fine. That blue-green color would surely have been a cause of seasickness...!

I gave the guns and assorted detail bits a Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna oil wash over their Tamiya acrylic base colors.

Russ, thanks for your Constellation story! By the time my dad and I visited the ship in 2010, there were quite a few historical displays on board:

Among my favorites was a sailor’s mess exhibit:

Yum!

Hi Tim,

Interesting photos, Looks like USN seamen got better rations than their RN contemporaries.

Cheers
