Pyke was also the guy who thought up Operation Plough, which envisioned a commando type unit operating relatively small tracked personnel carriers over the snow in Norway to harass the Germans

The force formed for this was the US/Canadian 1st Special Service Force. The operating tracks in Norway never came about, but the 1st SSF did go to the Aleutians, then to Italy, and ultimately Southern France, before being disbanded. The American elements of 1st SSF then formed the 474th Regimental Combat team, and finally got to Norway at the end of the war. They were man for man the best light Infantry force of their era. Today are the ancestral fore bearers of U S Army Special Forces.
