The plan set for the USS Pennsylvania is her 1945 fit. There are several differences between that and her major refit in 1943 when the Superstructure-01 deck was redone for the twin 5" guns and the Mainmast was replaced. Photos show several 20mm guns on the 01 deck that don't appear on the 1944 deck plans.
Also, one of the NavSource (776-43 Mare Island) photos definitely show deck shields (1/2 tubs?) on at least two of the 01 deck 20mm positions while another shows no deck shields - same set of photos.
The aft fire control tower also seems "simplified" vs the version on the 1944/45 plans.
Is there a drawing and deck plan set for the 1943 refit out there for the original Mare Island rebuild.
Thanks
Michael

Hi Michael,

The short answer is no. After a refit of the nature Mare Island undertook for the Pennsylvania in 1943, BuShips would draw new plans for the ship and destroy the old plans. Because of the torpedo damage taken by Pennsylvania off Okinawa in June(?) 1945, her reconstruction adding a Mk 8 director to the aft superstructure tower, and other improvements, initiated this process of redrawing and destruction of the 1943 plans. Your best best to find any plans of her 1943 fit is to find a copy of ONI-222 prior to 1945, or a copy of Siegfried Breyer's "Battleships", which both have simplified drawings of her 1943 period fit.

I'm not sure about the torpedo fix generating a new set of drawings but she did go in for a refit in early 1945 which resulted in changes in her electronics fit and changes in her anti-aircraft suite.
I believe that is when the dual 40mm replaced the rangefinder over the #2 turret and the aft fire control tower was rebuilt.
I think this is what the available Naval Plans show. Especially the later upgrades to the aft tower.
