Could anyone tell me what camouflage scheme HMS Fury was wearing during D-Day? I'm planning a painting of her beached at Arromanches, but only have black and white reference photos.

Here's the reference pic - would the funnel bands be white? Similar to identification bands on Allied aircraft?

Maybe the pdf-files available here could shed some light on this problem. The scheme should be possible to identify, given the date and the reasonably good views of the ship.

Thanks very much Robin. I had already looked at the Sovereign Hobbies website, lot of good material there.

I might just use artistic licence and use the HMS Belfast colour scheme!

You could also pick colours from the Revell Flower Class (HMS Bluebell) in case one or two differs from HMS Belfast. You've got the pattern, more or less, and "only" need to match the colours to the various fields.
Maybe you could paint some small patches and make a B/W-photo to check how light/dark the patches turn up.
Another possibility could be to check plastic kits of other destroyers from that period in case there is one with a pattern from 1944.
I have the instructions for the Bluebell somewhere so I might be able to find them and get you the paint references.

"From November 1942 to July 1944 HMS Belfast wore Admiralty Disruptive Camouflage Type 25 (507A Dark Grey, 507C Light Grey, B5 Dark Blue-Grey, B6 Blue)

HMS Bluebell has some greenish-yellow colour forwards which Belfast doesn't have.

Rip, I think I can help you with the bands on the funnel. I have been reading Sand and Steel by Peter Caddick-Adams and came across this passage:

“To aid recognition, just before D-Day all vessels in Force ‘S’ would have their funnels and hulls painted with a green stripe; craft going to Juno Beach with Force ‘J’ were to be similarly painted red, while those headed to Gold would boast a blue stripe.”
