Hi everyone,

Given the plethora of options/manufacturers out there I'm after advice from the experts on what ship kit I should get for my first ever build (well, since I was a lad about forty years ago anyway!)

My interest is in the pre-Dreadnought period from around 1850, although I don't have a particular preference for ships from any one nation and I'm even happy to try my hand at some PE parts. Hopefully that still leaves a few options for a reasonably trouble free first kit build?

Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

I am sure Simon will be along shortly with a proper rundown but I have seen the following built kits and they all look good. All in 1/350. I know there are other scale out there but I honestly don't pay much attention to them.

Hobby Boss Danton
Hobby Boss Lord Nelson
Hasegawa Mikasa

Tom is busy building the Trumpeter Schleswig-Holstein in its later guise so cant comment on how she will build up.

Simon,

There are no Pre-Dreadnoughts during the 1850's only steam powered sailing ships. I believe you are looking at something from 1890's to 1905?
