Heya, Folks!
I'm finishing up the Italeri LCM-3 and was wondering if anyone know of any references indicating whether any of these craft at either Iwo Jima or Okinawa were painted in any Naval camoflage...?
It would certainly be cool to do, but I want to make sure that it is accurate.
Any website or print references would be greatly appreciated!!
Many thanks!
Aloha,
Johnny B

try here http://hardcorpsmodels.com/
or http://www.awm.gov.au/ go to search collections, advanced search and then type in Landing craft and WW2 as the conflict.

According to the Squadron/Signal book on Landing craft, a number of LCM were painted in green camo patterns similar to those on the larger classes of landing craft. They list the colors, but there are no pictures of the pattern on the LCM. If you want I'll check on the colors for you.

According to page 16 of the Squadron book, the colors are Outside Greens (approximately FS34227, FS34108 and FS34092) and Outside Brown (approximately FS33105). There is a picture of an LCM3 which is apparently camoflaged in this Tropical Green pattern, which would be okay if you LCM is being depicted from fall of 1944.

Thanks, John and Cliff!!!
Man, color references sure are hard to come by!
Dave Harper over at Planet Armor (and founder of Hard Corps Models and originator of many Trakz) products, indicated that ship to shore landing craft tended to be gray, but any shore-based boats (often Army units) were camoflaged...
Any more references or input would be appreciated (I would love to paint a camo scheme, but my LCM is going to be landing a Sherman on Iwo Jima, so I want it ta be accurate)...
Thanks again, guys!

Sorry, but "Outside Greens" and "Outside Brown" are terms concocted by the writers at S/S. The correct USN references--as set forth in SHIPS-2, the USN WW2 camouflage guidance--for those colors are #1 Green, #2 Green, #3 Green, and #4 Brown. Since USN WW2 colors were matched to the 1929 Munsell Book of Color, any FS reference is only going to be an approximation. If you want an accurate match of those colors, we have them available in our Colourcoats enamels. If you want accurate matches of the earlier (1943) USN greens and browns, then you'll want the USN Set 2 paint chip set from Snyder & Short Enterprises (which we also stock). All of these are accurately matched to the 1929 Munsell Book of Color.
