Anyone know what color to use for IJN submarines? All my WW2 Japanese sub kits have Japanese boxes!

Howdy Garykato!
When I painted my IJN U-boat(bought from Germany) The instructions called for a very dark grey. When I matched it up with the paint I had on hand it came out to be very close to some IJN Kure grey that I had mixed up for my IJN Yamato and Mutsu battleships. So that is what I used on my sub. It is Model Masters enamel, gunship grey with a little bright blue mixed in. Here is a pic of my sub:

oops I forgot, the hull below the waterline is painted with MM enamel Insignia red, and the deck is gunship grey.

Hi GrayKato,

Contact the good folks at Steel Navy . They are very helpful. Many naval vendors are on-list, too, and rather willing to help.

Also, I bought WEM's color guide to IJN ships. I'll see if subs are list. Basically, unless you are looking for rivet-counting, most any dark gray will suffice for the five IJN builders.

Send me a letter if you would like the info in the book.

Oh, Garry, good looking sub!
